Robert Wharton III

WHARTON, Robert Hewitt III, June 10, 1915-Oct. 10, 2009. Delta Airline pioneer, Robert Hewitt Wharton, III, passed peacefully from this life on Oct. 10, 2009, at the age of 94. Bob worked for Delta from 1936 to 1973 before retiring to St. Simons Island, GA. He then began a new career as a starter at the Sea Island Golf Course for The Cloisters until early retirement at age 89. Bob moved to the Allegro independent living at College Harbor in January of this year. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed hosting his many friends from St. Petersburg for golf at Sea Island. Bob is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Swann Wharton. Granddaddy Bob is survived by his children, Nancy Wharton Fitzmorris, Robert H. Wharton, IV, MD and Phillip Leslie Wharton of Atlanta; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Bob will be remembered as a Southern gentleman and scholar by his family and the many friends he made along the way. Funeral services will be at Christ Church on St. Simons Island 9 am on Oct. 17th.
