Sandra TOUCHTON Obituary

TOUCHTON, Sandra (Calhoun) "Sandy"

78, died at her Tampa home December 20, 2016 following an extended illness. Born June 11, 1938 in Madison, FL, she was the daughter of John Caldwell Calhoun Jr. and Sara Alice Tooke. At age two, she moved with her family to Tallahassee, FL, where she lived until completing college.

In Tallahassee, Sandy graduated from Leon High School in 1956. She then graduated from Florida State University in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. While at FSU, she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and Village Vamps, and throughout her life remained an ardent Seminole.

Following her graduation from FSU, Sandy taught elementary school in Orlando. In 1961, she married C. Hugh "Happy" Hayes Jr. of Tampa where they lived for a number of years. Following a divorce in 1974, Sandy later married Dade City native Charles F. "Charlie" Touchton III, moving in 1977 to Boca Raton where Charlie was employed by the IBM Corporation. In 1984, IBM transferred Charlie to Tampa where he and Sandy have lived since, and where Sandy was often seen accompanying Charlie in his many civic activities. Charlie and Sandy were totally devoted to each other and recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

In addition to Charlie, Sandy is survived by two daughters, Brooke Hayes Rathmanner (John) of Boca Raton, FL and Ashley Hayes Shook (Doug) of Atlanta, GA; three stepchildren, Marcia Touchton Allen (Tony) of Damascus, MD, Brian Thomas Touchton (Marcyne) of Cornelius, NC, and Lynn Touchton Brukx (Bas) of Fairfax , VA; and twelve grandchildren, Jake Rathmanner, Doug Shook, Brooke Shook, Hayden Shook, Kathryn Allen, Steven Allen, Drew Touchton, Kyle Touchton, Paige Touchton, Peter Brukx, Julia Brukx, and Emily Brukx. She is also survived by her brother, John C. Calhoun III of Galveston, TX and two nephews, Jay Calhoun and Bill Calhoun.

The family gratefully acknowledges the attentive care provided over a number of years by the LifeLink Foundation and the Tampa General Medical Group Transplant Program and, more recently, by LifePath Hospice.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 14, 2017, 11 am, at Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church, 3501 West San Jose Street, Tampa, with Rev. Dr. John T. DeBevoise officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tampa Bay History Center, the Tampa General Hospital Foundation, or the charity of your choice. Charlie, I'm so sorry that you lost your sweet, beautiful Sandy. Words can't express what I feel for you. Sandy was such an easy person to talk to, and I missed both of you at the last SLCP/HNA reunion, and worried about why you weren't there, because you were always so loyal to your Alma Mater. I've thought of you so often since then and should've inquired sooner if both of you were ok.
I hope you have wonderful memories to sustain you, and your family. Love, Maggie

Remember Sandra as summer park director at Doug Burnett Park in the late 1950s. She made all us kids feel really special. I have wondered about her often. She was a very special person.

Dear John.

I am so sorry to hear about your sister. I have special memories of the two of you when we were youngsters in Tallahassee. You were in my class throughout school and Sandra a couple of years younger. I have a sweet memory of her bringing me a box of lovely soap to my birthday party when you and I were about ten. She was such a pretty girl and remained so.

I have thought about the two of you often over the years. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family now.

So sorry to see his, Charlie. Sandy was the first person that gave me hope when I was told I was dying. She told me, "Not necessarily so". That meant the world to me. Literally. You were right there. So glad I thanked her many times. Crying now just remembering her...
