Stephen Bennett Obituary

Bennett, Stephen Alan

74, of Wesley Chapel, Florida passed away on March 24, 2025.

Stephen was born on August 24, 1950, the son of Ruth Rutkin Bennett and Earle Bennett.

Stephen grew up attending Rodeph Sholom Synagogue on Bayshore Boulevard. After graduating from Plant High School, he continued on towards a bachelor's degree in accounting at the University of South Florida, was a CPA, and obtained a law degree from Florida State University and an LLM in taxation at the University of Florida, where, after having the highest scores in his LLM class, he was asked to teach the following year at the University of Florida Law School. He returned to the Tampa Bay area after teaching at the law school, where he practiced business and tax law for many years.

Steve was an avid football fan and Formula 1 racing fan. From 1967 until this past year, he never missed a race at Sebring. Attending the 2021 Super Bowl where the Bucs were victorious was one of his favorite memories since he had been a Bucs fan from the beginning. His greatest love was for his daughter, Sara. He devoted his later years to helping and guiding Sara. They were inseparable. Steve is survived by his daughter, Sara and his sister, Susan. A graveside service will take place Friday, March 28, 11 am at Schaarai Zedek Cemetery on N. Ola Avenue in Tampa. To express condolences online, visit segalfuneralhome.com.

I always joked Stephen about "having me on retainer" as a contractor. He would constantly find work for me to do. Most times I would stop by to look at a 5 min job and we would sit and talk for hours. I will miss him.

Stephen was brilliant. He said that when he took a course, he would read the entire text book, before the first class started because he wanted the class presentations/discussions/work to have context. When he laughed, it was more of a breathing in, rather than a "ha ha" of breathing out. He smiled often and had a grasp of what he wanted from life, setting standards and goals for himself and sometimes wanting to prompt those he loved to live to the fullest of their abilities. But, if something got in the way, he was more committed to the person rather than the goal. Family was important. Having his sister, Susan, working with him, a part of him, was important and having Sara as his daughter was the joy of his heart. He was a kind man and respected others for who they were, never comparing them to his own abilities. I have not seen Stephen in over 50 years but I will miss thinking he is a part of this life.

Mr. Bennett was a very nice, kind man and was always thrilled to read to the kids over the holidays at Storytime. Sending prayers and condolences to his family. He will be missed.

In memory of a young lawyer who made fun of us because we named our
dogs after Jewish foods who was like another son to us.
