Alexander Webster Obituary

Alexander "Alex Big Red" Webster, 80, died March 3, 2012, at St. Lucie Medical Center in Port St. Lucie. He was born in Kearny, N.J., and lived in Hobe Sound for many years, prior to moving to Port St. Lucie. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University with a degree in physical education. He was first drafted by the Washington Redskins and played for the Montreal Alouettes (CFL) for two years, 1953 & 1954, and was an All-Star. In 1955 he was traded to the New York Giants and was an All-Pro for two years as a running back. He made the Pro Bowl in 1958 and 1961. He retired in 1964 and became the assistant coach of the Giants under Allie Sherman. In 1969, he was named head football coach for the New York Giants. He was named coach of the year in 1970. For a period after football, he worked for Nabisco as a team representative. He was also the owner of The Stadium Restaurant in Sea Girt, N.J., and Alex Webster's Restaurant in Tequesta. He was a member of Spring Lake Golf Club, Frenchman's Creek Golf Club, Turtle Creek Golf Club, Hound Ears Golf Club & Lost Lake Golf Club. He was also an honorary member of the VFW, American Legion and The Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his daughter, Debbie Moberg of Point Pleasant, N.J.; son, James Webster of Hobe Sound; brother, James Webster of Grand Rapids, Mich.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Webster, in 2009. Memorial contributions may be made to Harbor Place, 3700 S.E. Jennings Road, Port St. Lucie FL 34952. Services: Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. March 7 in the chapel of Martin Funeral Home, Stuart, with a celebration service to begin at 11 a.m. Arrangements are by Martin Funeral Home & Crematory, Stuart.
