Carol Cole Obituary

Carol Ann McHugh Cole

Carol Ann McHugh Cole passed away on Sunday May 8, 2016 following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Cole was born on November 14, 1936 in Wheeling, WV to the late Charles Albert and Margaret Bickel McHugh. In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Leigh Anne Cole.

Carol spent her early years in Bluefield where she would meet her husband of sixty one years, William Paul Cole, Jr. Carol and Paul lived briefly in New York and Boston before returning to Bluefield to raise their family and build their life together. In addition to devoting herself to raising their three boys, Carol was very active in the local community. She became a REALTOR, operated a coffee delivery service and was a partner in the Ugly Duckling Antique Store. Carol lived her life to the fullest. She traveled the world. She was an accomplished artist who loved art, her gardens, entertaining friends, and decorating her homes. She was an avid golfer, tennis player and runner in her younger years. Carol loved and was loved by her large and extensive family who will miss her deeply. She is survived by her husband, Paul; sons, Senator William P. Cole, III and Brownie; Charles McHugh Cole and Terri, and Thomas Jacob Cole and Michelle Muncy; her younger sister, Mary McHugh Johnson of Salem, VA; grandchildren, Jason Cole and Jessica, Lee Cole and Laura, Elizabeth Cole, Taylor Cole, Charles Cole and Paige Wilson, William Cole and Christina Cole, Christian Cole, Cameron Cole, Lee-Anne Greene and Brad, Jacob Cole and Chelsea, Ever Pauley and Brandon, Emma Cole and Carol-Anne Cole; and seven great-grandchildren. The Cole family is also grateful for Dr. Fred Barker, Dr. Phil Peterson, the BRMC CCU nurses, and Dr. Joel Schor and the staff of Hospice Compassus who offered loving hands and comfort to Carol during her illness. Funeral service will be conducted on Friday May 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Wanda Childs, Rev. Gary Moore, Rev. Tom Connelly, and Father Chad Slater officiating. The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour.
