Clement Labine Obituary

Clement W. "Clem" Labine, 80, died March 2, 2007, at Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach. He was born in Lincoln, R.I., and was a winter resident of Vero Beach for 60 years. He was a pitcher for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets, of which he was an original member, baseball teams. He appeared in six World Series, winning two with the Dodgers and one with the Pittsburgh Pirates; three All Star Games; and was elected to the Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Fame. He served as a paratrooper in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Rhode Island Historical Society, Franco-American Society and a charter member of the Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln, R.I. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Todisco Labine of Cumberland and Vero Beach; son, Clem Labine Jr. of Woonsocket, R.I.; daughters, Barbara Grubbs of Reno, Nev., and Gail Ponanski and Kim Archambault, both of Smithfield, R.I.; stepdaughter, Susan Gershkoff of Lincoln; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. SERVICES: A Mass will be celebrated at noon March 8 at St. Helen Catholic Church in Vero Beach. Burial will be in Rhode Island.
