Dolores Fisher Obituary

DOLORES HORTON FISHER 4-6-1936-13-2009 Dolores Horton Fisher, 72 years old. All have been used to describe Dolores "Deo" Fisher, widow of the late treasure hunter Mel Fisher, who lost her own battle with cancer Tuesday afternoon - 10 years and one month after her legendary husband succumbed to the same. Although she was born, and died, in Montana, Deo Fisher lived a waterlogged life on both coasts. Born Dolores Horton, she married the charismatic Mel Fisher in 1953 in California when she was 17. The young married couple embarked on Mel's dream of opening a shop that catered exclusively to the burgeoning population of recreational scuba divers, and Deo did her part to entice more female participants to the sport. Together, she and Mel taught an estimated 65,000 people how to dive. In August 1959, she broke the world's underwater endurance record by remaining submerged in a 10-foot-deep porpoise tank for more than 55 hours and 37 minutes using scuba equipment. The Vero Beach community met Deo Fisher when she arrived in the 1960's with Mel and their young family to begin a journey of fun, romance, and adventure of treasure hunting. This expedition led to the search for the Nuestra Senora de Atocha in the keys and they succesfully salvaged one of the richest Spanish Galleons of all times, and the search continues. "Her love for the ocean and all it contained was only surpassed by the love for her family," said Melissa Kendrick, executive director of the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, which Deo helped found in 1982. "Many of the divers had come from broken families, and Deo was very much the mother of all of us, and we all thought of her that way. Said by Don Kincaid. Deo is survived by two sisters; Nadine Sotzin and Judy Staffen, three sons; Terry Fisher, Kim Fisher, and Kane Fisher, one daughter; Taffi Abt, eighteen grandchildren, and six great grand children. Her generous laugh and never ending optimism will be greatly missed by all. She was the most amazing women I ever knew. Said her daughter Taffi. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, in honor of Dolores's grandson who died of sudden cardiac arrest in 2006, donations be made to the Michael Abt Jr. Have a Heart Foundation at 1322 U.S. Highway One. Sebastian, FL 32958, or to the Hospice Foundation whom Dolores is forever grateful for. Services are yet to be determined but are sure to be held sometime in the coming months and will be posted at www.melfisher.com.

I discovered late of Deo's passing and have yet to process it fully. Speaking to her a few months ago, as alway's, I was refreshed by her wit and charm. She put up with my raunchy remarks and always had nice things to say of everyone. She was happy in Montana and her book was put off too many times so she could have fun and enjoy life. She did that well. I will miss not being able to read all of her secret stories. The stories she did tell made it clear who really held everything together even if she didn't take claim for it.
To Kane. I miss you buddy and wish you all the best. You know you can call anytime and there is always a bunk for you. We all send our love. God be with you and all your family.

Deepest sympathy to the Fisher family. Deo will be missed by the treasure salvage community and those that knew her. She was a part of history that will live forever and a charter member of America's greatest generation.

Dearest Terry, Kim, Kane and Taffi ...

Deo's life and accomplishments are amazing. Our warmest and deepest sympathies on her passing.

We are sure those accomplishments were that much sweeter as she traveled life with Mel and all of you at her side. The devotion that you all shared during all of the years, the wonderful work experiences you had together is evident.

We send you many healing thoughts and are sure that the memories of Deo and your beautiful life together will continue to hold her spirit close to your hearts.

ENJOY BEING!!!

My sincere condolences to you and your family. I can understand the pain you went through watching her suffer and although we may try to prepare for the inevitable, it is never easy dealing with the loss a loved one. Your mother was full of life and loved very much. May your cherished memories help you during this difficult time and in the future. (A friend of Kane's)

Of all the treasure that came in and out of the doors of the Fisher organization over the years, by far the biggest treasure of all was Deo Fisher. Deo was the glue that held that place together unbeknownst to many people and those who indeed knew her realize that this entry is simply preaching to the choir. Deo's quick smile, wry wit, and common sense will be sorely missed.

To the entire Fisher Clan:

We have lost a great lady.

Ellie and I got to know her and Mel as you all grew up in the Keys.

We kept in contact with her after Mel passed away and encouraged her to write the book that will now never be completed. It would have been a classic.

Please know that your loss is also ours.

Lots of Love,

Ernie & Ellie Richards
