Mary Metzger Obituary

Mary E. "Betty" Metzger

Jupiter, FL

METZGER, Mary E. "Betty", 83, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on March 21, 2018. Betty was born in Boston, MA and was one of five daughters of the late Alfred Lloyd and Catherine (Hickey) Lloyd. Betty was a dedicated and loving wife, mother and daughter, and a dear friend to many. Betty graduated from St. Joseph's College in 1956. While attending college she met the love of her life, Joseph Metzger, who practiced law in Palm Beach County and throughout Florida for many decades. Betty and Joe enjoyed 36 years of marriage until his untimely passing in 1992. Together they raised their five children with love and devotion. Betty exhibited a quiet and unassuming demeanor, but possessed great internal strength. She seemingly effortlessly juggled the hectic school and athletic schedules of her five children, all the while quietly instilling in them her resolute work ethic and respect for others. After her children were grown, she enjoyed visiting them and traveling, particularly to Colorado, Ohio and New England. Betty was full of life and love and will be sorely and forever missed.

Betty is survived by her five beloved children, 14 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild: Kathy Goodhew (Ken) of Boulder, CO, and their children, Rebecca (husband, Andrew and son, Silas), Sarah and Laura; Anne Metzger (Dag Seymour) of Westminister, CO and their children, Erin and Megan; Elizabeth Metzger (Brad Larsen) of Stuart, FL and their children, Erik, Colin and Matthew; Joseph Metzger (Kari) of Tampa, FL and their children, Joseph, Julia and Victoria; and Thomas Metzger (Alison Day) of Columbus, OH and their children, Shelby, Ellia and Quinn. Betty is also survived by two sisters, Barbara Herbert (Richmond, VA) and Alfreda Via (Richmond, VA); and many in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

Friends may visit with the family from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Aycock-Riverside Funeral Home, 1112 Military Trail, Jupiter, FL 33458. I met Betty through her college roommate Mary Frances. We would see each other a couple of times a year in Vero Beach. We would always have great conversations about her expanding family and her travels to see you all. She loved each and every one of you dearly!!!! My heart is heavy over the loss of such a fine and kind human being.

I always enjoyed being able to stay at Aunt Betty and Uncle Joe's house on the lake when I was growing up. Aunt Betty was so kind, gentle, and thoughtful, and made me feel comfortable and part of the family. The family dinners were full of family love and caring, and it all happened with Aunt Betty's attention to everything else going on with the sports, church, and general kid activities. You and your gentle, loving spirit are greatly appreciated and missed.

Betty was a faithful member of St. Patrick Church Prayer Shawl Ministry in Palm Beach Gardens. She hand made shawls to keep cancer and seriously ill patients warm during their illness and recuperation at home. These shawls and wheelchair blankets are donated to Jupiter Hospital and very ill parishioners. Betty had concern for others and helped in a material way to comfort the sick and dying. Betty was a lovely, gracious member of our group and we will miss her. May God wrap her in a very special shawl of love as He knows one of his caring souls has come home to her reward. Rest in peace and happiness. N. Kildea and C. Lauritano on behalf of the PSM of St. Patrick
