Robert Graves Obituary

Robert R. (Bob) Graves

Stuart, FL

Robert R. (Bob) Graves, of Stuart, Florida passed away peacefully August 23, 2018, at the age of 88. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Mary; his beloved Chihuahua, Coco; and a blended family of children, including Linda Carter; Lynn (Dave) England; Lisa (David) Forson; Ron (Betty) Graves; Sandra (Brent) Walker; Tonya Jakubowski; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to whom he was affectionately known as "Grampy"; his elder sister Gilda Rath as well as several nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded, in death, by his parents Ralph and Laura Graves; ex-wife Audrey Jean (Perry); son Robert Perry Graves; and his faithful Chihuahua, Gizzy.

Born July 13, 1930 to Ralph Wallace and Laura (Lamoreux) Graves in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, he was the youngest of three children. The son of a Canadian National Railways telegrapher/station master meant there were several moves across western Canada, and growing up in the 30's meant that families needed to be resourceful. Bob often shared memories of hunting and fishing with his father, in addition to his stories of greatness on the local hockey rinks.

Awarded a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Alberta in 1953, he launched his career with Mobil Oil. During the course of his career, Bob obtained his American citizenship, worked throughout the United States and internationally, doing work that he loved and pursuing interests such as deep sea fishing in his spare time. His working life was literally an international adventure. With the skill, passion, and personability Bob brought to the table he rose through the ranks, eventually retiring as Vice President, Exploration, Mobil Oil Corporation, in 1991.

Bob and Mary retired to Stuart, Florida, where they enjoyed boating, fishing and golfing with friends and family. During their retirement years, Bob made many close friendships that he valued greatly and continued his journey as a lifelong learner, reading avidly and following the political happenings of the world closely.

Those who had the opportunity to know Bob would all agree that he was a knowledgeable man with a curious mind and a near-legendary gift of storytelling; combined with a great sense of humor and a spirit guided by kindness and generosity, he was truly one of a kind. Bob will be dearly missed for his quiet sense of affection, unpretentious manner and devotion to those he loved.

Prior to his passing Bob spent several weeks in hospital followed by hospice care. The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses, caregivers and others - all who cared for him so lovingly as his health declined.

With respect to Bob's wishes, a private memorial will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions, to the charity of choice, may be made in Bob's name.
