Sara Oyster Obituary

Sara Margaret Sasser "Sassy" Oyster, 80, died April 26, 2012, at home. She was born in Conway, S.C., and lived in Alexandria, Va., from 1957 until 1989 when she moved to Vero Beach. She was employed in the insurance business. She was a past president of the Alexandria Junior Woman's Club, a member of TWIG, Junior Auxiliary to the Alexandria Hospital and a member of the Junior League of Washington, D.C. In 1961, as ways and means chair of the Alexandria Junior Woman's Club, she was in charge of an embassy tour in Washington for the benefit of the School for Handicapped Children in Alexandria. She encouraged the Soviet Embassy to open its doors to the public for the tour. After moving to Vero Beach, she became involved with Hospice Care. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and former board member of John's Island Club. She was a graduate of Hollins College with a bachelor of arts degree in history. Survivors include her son, Stewart Boswell of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter, Joan Kirwin of Scarsdale, N.Y.; sister, Joan Coker of Hartsville, S.C.; brother, George "Buddy" Sasser of Conway; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Fairfax Oyster; and daughter, Margaret Sasser Surbaugh. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32963; or Trinity Episcopal Church. Services: A memorial service to celebrate her life will be conducted at a later date. Arrangements are by Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach. A guestbook is available at www.strunkfuneralhome.com.
