Dave Grocott Obituary

Dave Grocott

October 18, 1929 - February 13, 2025

David John Grocott passed away on February 13, 2025, in Longview, Wash., at the age of 95. He was a loving husband and father, a captain, forester, singer, and punmaker.

Dave was the principal at several Longview elementary schools, served as a longtime leader at the Longview Community Church, and was a dedicated volunteer in the Longview community. He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Mellicent Elaine (Becker) Grocott.

Born in Kelso on October 18, 1929, just in time for the great stock market crash, Dave got to work quickly. He milked the cow at his family's home on Pine Street in Longview before heading to classes at Columbia Valley Gardens Elementary. As a young man, he cut meat at the Kelso Piggly Wiggly, maintained railroads (a "gandy dancer") for Weyerhaeuser, and ferried guests across Spirit Lake to the Harmony Falls Lodge. He was a teacher, and then a principal at Longview's Robert Gray, Mint Valley, and Northlake elementary schools, where he pitched kickballs at recess, presided over model rocket launches and introduced kids to outdoor school at Cispus Learning Center. He operated salmon charter boats out of Ilwaco, Washington. -- originally a "summer job" between school years -- for 35 years.

Dave embraced all those jobs, though his pride was in providing for his family. He married his lifelong love, Millie, in 1953.

Dave's parents and Millie's parents were all present in the area prior to Longview's founding in 1923, ensuring them excellent seats at 23 Club dinners. Dave and Millie built the home on Sunset Way where they raised children Laura (Floodeen), Beth (Sammons), John, and Jeff. Dave dragooned his kids for work parties to sand and paint elderly charter boats and roused them out of bed on Saturdays to gather cords of firewood ('warms you twice -- once when you haul it and once when you burn it').

Dave graduated from RA Long High School in 1947 and Western Washington State College in Bellingham. He received a Master's degree from the Colorado State College of Education at Greeley and enlisted in the US Army, serving as a sergeant in the Korean War.

By then, his lifelong passions were set. Dave took to the water as a six-year-old, rowing his parents' dingy around Mud Bay in Olympia, eventually trading up to a 50-ton captain's license and a 40-foot charter boat. Walks in the woods with his father-in-law, Andrew Becker, nurtured a lifelong love of forestry. A half-miler in high school and college track, Dave would spend most mornings jogging at the shoulder of Sunset Way, three decades before Nike advised us to "Just Do It."

After Dave's retirement from the Longview School District, he loved to travel with Millie -- across the US and Europe, and from Russia and Estonia to China, Australia, and New Zealand. Dave and Millie enjoyed driving up the Alcan highway to remote Alaska; Dave took three more trips to Alaska aboard 30-foot fishing boats that he helped son John pilot to Cordova via the Inside Passage and Gulf of Alaska. Dave took great joy in recounting the latest doings and wanderings of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Dave served his church and community. He was a leader of Boy Scouts of Longview's Troop 514 and a founding member of Longview's Morning Rotary Club. He was a deacon and a director at the Longview Community Church, as well as the volunteer caretaker (for more than 50 years) of an 80-acre tree farm near Silver Lake that was donated to the church in 1965. Dave sang baritone in the church's Temple Singers choir for more than 60 years and participated in 100 of the church's holiday performances of Handel's Messiah, missing just one concert to stay home to battle a flue fire in the wood stove.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Grocott and Madeline Grace (Archer) Grocott, and by his siblings, Dawn James and Betty Wilson, and his beloved daughter, Laura.

He is survived by Millie; his sister, Sandra Kure Shaw; children, Beth (Milton Sammons), John (Cheri), and Jeff (Barbara); son-in-law, Eric Floodeen; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests supporting Longview Community Church's scholarships for Christian ministry students, as Dave did.

Mr. Grocott was the principal at Mint Valley Elementary during my second year of teaching at that school. I had pretty much made up my mind that I was not going to continue teaching. One day he walked into my classroom after the kids had left, and all he said was "Just let me know by April if you plan on being here next year". And that was it. He didn't question my decision or try to change my mind. I was just so appreciative that he understood I was the best judge of whether or not I was cut out to be a teacher. I then went on to work in WA state government. Such a classy and thoughtful person whom I have never forgotten. My condolences to his family.

I knew Mr. Grocott practically all my life. He was my elementary school principal at Robert Gray when I started first grade there in 1963. Of course, getting to know the principal of one´s elementary school only happened if you were sent to his office. I think Mr. Grocott had a seat with my name on it. The first part is only partly true. Mr. Grocott was a very "hands-on", very present educator. Often showing up on the playground during recess, or in classrooms. I was part of the inaugural Robert Gray Model Rocketry Club, which Mr. Grocott, proactively, started as a way to keep several of us out of trouble exploring the attics, crawl spaces and other verboten areas of Robert Gray. Great memories Mr. G!

Years later, through my involvement in the youth group at Longview Community Church I became re-acquainted with Mr. Grocott and through his daughter, Laura, the rest of the Grocott family. The impact of Mr. Grocott and his family on me and my life in Christ was second to no other family. The chair with my name on it moved from his principal´s office to a chair at their dinner table, where they all made me feel very welcome. And that impact continued through my last visit to their home on Tibbets Drive shortly before Mr. and Mrs. Grocott relocated to The Canterbury, and still continues. Such good memories.

I can´t imagine Longview will have a venue large enough for all the people who will want to pay tribute to Mr. Grocott at his memorial service. It will be a grand time. No doubt, Mr. Grocott, should he walk in, would ask in his humble manner, "Why all the fuss?"

this note comes from Tom Pulliam on behalf of my Sister Ann Pulliam Peterson

I noted Dave's obituary when it was first published and shared it with Ann as well as Pat Lambert..............we all remember Laura Grocott Flodeen incredibly well as part of FBI and CCYF as well as The God Squad Trip to Alaska on the ship The Anna Jackman -- I have many photos of this here in my home in Winston-Salem NC and will surely bring it with me to celebrate The Wonderful Life of Mickey Kirkpatrick which hopefully will happen over Easter Weekend 2025...........

lifting all remaining members of The Grocott People up in prayer especially Millie who I remember very fondly.............

when my mom, Margaret passed away in about 2012 or so, she wanted everyone to shout "Hallelujah" -- likely inspired by The Senior Choir lead by Dr. Neal Kirkpatrick during The Annual Longview Community Church Performance of The Messiah............

on behalf of all of us that were born and raised at the corner of 1602-24th and Maple Street in 98632, we will pray for you -- earlier today, I celebrated Ash Wednesday at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church here in W/S

my best to all readers,

The last time I saw Millie & Dave was at their condo a couple years ago when they graciously offered me access to Millie´s genealogy notes. My mother, Carol Letsinger Hagdahl and Mellicent were 1st cousins. I´m hoping someone from the family can contact me because I am in possession of 1, possibly 2 trunks that Uncle Andrew made and am wondering if family would like them. (The estate sale people are coming tomorrow to start pricing items.)
Sending my condolences and apologize for the poor timing.

I will miss him SO MUCH.
I just found out about this today! (3/1/25). If I had known sooner, I would have liked to attend his funeral. My love and prayers to Millie and all the family. He has definitely earned his Heavenly crown.

Mr Grocott was my Grade School Principal at Robert Gray K-5. When I was 19 I got a deep sea fishing trip for my birthday. Go to the boat and there was Mr Grocott. He welcomed me as an old friend but then he put me to work but rewarded me by letting me drive the boat back in. That is an experience that has been told many times along with other people's experiences with Mr Grocott.

Mr. Grocott made an imposing impression on me, (authority, wisdom and most of all care).bus-He emphasized the "care" when he gave me my first "hack" for playing in the school-bus-loading zone. He stood tall in my memory. After reading his obit just seems a lot taller.

He was my principal through my years at Robert Gray. He was a wonderful man. He knew all the kids´ names, and played with us at recess and fairly disciplined when needed. He will be missed.

Dave was my grade school principal at Mint Valley. Always out and about, and involved with all his students. Whether it was on the playground kicking a ball, or in a classroom to just say hello, he was always available for anyone, and at anytime.
He deeply cared for each and every student, in his charge.
I will fondly remember his warm smile, positive attitude and caring heart.
My thoughts and prayers to all of you.

I remember Mr Grocott from Robert Gray. He was one of the best. He had a photographic memory. At least that was my impression. His passing will be a great loss. My condolences to his family and friends.

I have fond memories of David Grocott as the principal at Robert Gray from 1955 in kindergarten all through fifth grade; I believe he may have been the first principal there. And he was by far the best person I've ever encountered in that position, both in the schools I attended and those attended by my children. When my mother was still alive, she sometimes ran into him in Longview and he always asked after us three kids. What a memory! I've lived in California more than twice as long as I lived in California, so I never understood what a rich life he lived outside his professional dealings. What an inspiration to us older folks.

I was 10 yrs old when my family moved from Packwood to Longview in 1962. My first yr at a big city school was at Robert Gray where Dave Grocott was the principal. He was a man who got close to the students & allowed them to feel comfortable & sno>afe. I was blessed to meet him in approx 2015 & shared with him my memory as a former student. I learned he was a longtime friend of my close by neighbor Larry Busack. They cut wood together to give to those in need of fire wood. He was a great example of someone giving back to his local community. I was blessed to have known him.

As a very young girl and up through middle age, when I attended the Longview Community Church, I thought Mr. Grocott was the most handsome real life man I´d ever seen. He could compete with Tom Selleck with the very dark hair ... and the mustache.
I didn´t attend any of his schools as a youngster, but he seemed like a perfect type man to work with children. I´m sure his students remember him fondly.
I am sorry his family is feeling great sorrow at his passing. Others in the community share their grief. Dave Grocott was a very good man.
