Dean Weibel Obituary

Dean Alden Weibel

Dec. 31, 1930 - Sept. 18, 2022

Dean Weibel, age 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 18, 2022, at St Anne's Hospital in Burien, Washington. He was born on December 31, 1930, in Madrid, Nebraska, spending most of his life in or around Vancouver, Washington.

After a 4-year stint in the Navy, and graduating from Central Washington College, he became an elementary school teacher in Longview, Washington. He was recognized by his peers as an advocate for public education, joining the WEA Board of Directors helping shape education policy in Washington State through the 1970s. The students who were in Dean's classes always felt cared for and important. He loved making small mistakes so that students would see that it was OK to be imperfect, it just mattered that you tried. While living in Longview, Dean was involved in many community activities including Executive Director for the Chinook Council of the Boy Scouts and deacon for the Longview Community Church. Family was his most important job however with long weekends at the beach cabin and summer-long trips around the US making family central to all he did.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Donna; brother, Merlin (Phyllis); sister, Janice (Don, dec.); his children: Glenda (Robert), Mike (Barbara), and Dave (Kathy) along with his grandchildren: Zachary, Brendan, Olivia, Bridget, and Sydney as well as many nieces and nephews.

Dean will be interred at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Covington, Washington. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life on Thursday, September 29 between 11:30 and 3:00 at the Lake Wilderness Lodge, 22500 SE 248th St, Maple Valley, WA 98038. Tim and I remember Dean as a kind and loving educator. Dean and Donna were friends from the old days in the Longview School District and we have fond memories of our friendship.
We wish peace and love for Donna and the family.

Dean was a wonderful man who always had a ready smile. He and Donna always seemed to be having fun and brought their positive attitudes to their teaching. My thought are with Donna and her family during this difficult time.

Yes, I remember the day
It was on the mourn
That I saw a ship a sailing
Sea was calm
Winds were fair
Flag it snapped
Home port was nigh
Dean still young
And he was at the rail
With shipmates once again.---rs

Mr Weibel was my daughter´s teacher in the fifth grade at Kessler Elementary School in 1984/85. I sent the link to his obituary to her this morning and she wrote back that he was a very kind and sweet man. I remember that he responded promptly to any questions I had during the year and was supportive of the projects the PTA team promoted during that year. His support of my child and in my work on school fundraising PTA projects was appreciated. I always felt that teachers and church staff and one´s family had to work together to get a kid raised to adulthood and in developing a good citizen and basic good person. Mr. Weibel helped his students and their families work together and he was a good teacher. I am sorry for your loss.
He was a good man.

Love the detail about making small mistakes when teaching his students to demonstrate it´s OK to be imperfect. To our nearby neighbors we are thinking of you, your mom/grandmother & entire family. In honor of dedicated educator Mr. Weibel, a donation will be made in his honor to Islandwood.
