Ray Niska Obituary

Ray H. Niska Sr., 90, of Portland died Oct. 6, 2006.

He was born July 11, 1916, in Brainerd, Minn., to Emil and Ida Niska. The family moved to Franklin, Minn., when he was 6 years old.

Mr. Niska worked on a farm before moving to Chicago and working various jobs. He performed custom combining from Kansas to Minnesota and moved to Los Angeles in 1941. He worked for Lockheed and Douglas aircraft companies.

In 1953, he married Dyyne Benjamson and moved to Berkeley, Calif. They moved to Concord, Calif., in 1956 where he worked as a carpenter and to Clatskanie in 1968 where he worked for Floyd Jones Construction. He retired in 1978 and moved to Portland in 2004.

His wife preceded him in death.

Survivors include three sons, Harvey Niska, John Niska and Richard Niska; a brother, Vernon Niska; a sister, Alice Walli; and 17 grandchildren.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Clatskanie. Vault interment will follow at Murray Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at Haakinson-Groulx Mortuary Chapel in Clatskanie.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Apostolic Lutheran Church, Attn: Louise Johnson, 30378 Brownlee Road, Rainier, OR 97048.
