Arthur Losapio Obituary

Arthur Losapio, 91

Whitinsville - Arthur Losapio, 91, of Whitinsville, passed away peacefully into eternal life on Thursday, October 9, 2014, at Rose Monahan Hospice Residence, after a brief illness.

Arthur was predeceased by his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Elizabeth "Barbara" Losapio. He is survived by four sons, Hon. Paul A. Losapio and his wife Lenora, Attorney Joseph M. Losapio and his wife Charlotte, Arthur F. Losapio, and John "Bear" Losapio, all of Worcester; his daughter, Nora Atchue and her husband Michael, of Whitinsville, with whom he resided at the time of his death; his grandchildren, Cara, Christina, Catherine, Ashley, Joshua, and Mia; his sister, Lucy Rinaldi of Worcester; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Frank, Mauro, and Peter Losapio.

He was born in Worcester, son of Paul and Mary (LaVolpicello) Losapio and lived in the Shrewsbury Street area of Worcester most of his life. Arthur was educated in the Worcester Public School System and was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II.

Following his discharge on January 1, 1946, Arthur went to work with the City of Worcester Water Operations Department, where he remained for the next forty-six years. He retired in 1992 as an Inspector Foreman. In announcing his retirement, the Water Operations Department described Arthur as exemplifying "the dedicated municipal employee. His vast knowledge of the water system was a storehouse of information for all, his determined, sometimes demanding, but never quiet style guided many new employees……and his sense of humor always brightened the office."

Arthur and Barbara enjoyed many trips together, including trips to Las Vegas, Hawaii, and Italy, the home of his ancestors. Arthur also enjoyed spending time in the family's summer home on Cape Cod in Cotuit, MA, especially when his grandchildren were present.

As his children became older, Arthur turned to raising vegetables. He was always willing to receive advice (and a few tomato plants) from the old-timers in the neighborhood. After his retirement, his garden became one of the biggest in the area. In his final decade, Arthur took great pleasure in eating out with members of his family. He also enjoyed watching television with his family members, especially NCIS and various sporting events. Arthur particularly enjoyed watching golf on Sundays with his son John.

Arthur was a devout member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Saint Ann Parish.

The family would like to thank his primary care physician, Dr. Gayatrivedi Ika, for helping him to achieve his daily goal of maintaining his physical and mental health up until a few weeks before his death.

Calling Hours for Arthur will be held on Monday, October 13, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.in MERCADANT E FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. His Funeral will be held on Tuesday, from the funeral home, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Saint Ann Church, 24 Mulberry Street, Worcester. Interment will follow in Saint John's Cemetery, Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the parish building fund at Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Saint Ann Church, 28 Mulberry Street, Worcester, MA 01605.
