Benjamin Emerick Obituary

Sgt. Benjamin P. "Benny" Emerick, 77, of 18 Kennedy St. died Fri. May 16, 2008 after a short stay at Beaumont Nursing Home. He was son of John J. Sr. and Martha E. (VanRiper) Emerick and was raised in Uxbridge where he attended the public schools, Worcester Boys Trade, Quinsigamund Community College and Clark University. He was a Sergeant on the Uxbridge Police Department, retiring in 1996 after a long career of public service.

Benny was well known as the founder and director of several fife and drum corps and served as principal director of the former Commonwealth F&D, the Captain James Buxton F&D, the AA Sherman Camp 18 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, The Sturbridge Martial Band, Uxbridge Minutemen and friend to so many others.

We are saddened to learn of Ben's death. He gave so much to Uxbridge, to public safety, and to expanding the public's appreciation of history and historical music. Ben also successfully proposed legislation to establish "The Road to Boston" as the state's ceremonial march and to designate a bridge in Uxbridge as the "Capt. James Buxton Bridge." He made a positive difference in the life of Uxbridge and the Commonwealth.

Some of my best memories were growing up in the drumb corp. The most appreciated are when Benny, the policeman, would always save my butt when I was gettiing into local mischief. Than You sooo much Ben, You will never be forgotten by my family.

At a Deep River muster in the late 50's-early 60's, on my way to Swede Hall, a guy walked up and struck up a conversation. He followed up later that week by mailing me fife music. Benny was one of the first who showed me by example what drum corps is.
I am only one of so, so many who will miss Benny as a good friend.

I still treasure the talks I had with Benny about music and drum corps. He was absolutely the kindest, most considerate man - a true gentleman. He will be missed by so many.
