Dave,
Our hearts are broken to lose you! 2 years ago you moved in next door and immediately we knew we were the lucky ones! Thank you for always finding love and joy in Emily and Bens adventures and welcoming them always. Oh and thank you for finding the shoes and toys left behind. We will watch over Erin as I know you are. Erin I hope you forever feel his love wrapped around you. We keep you and all of Dave’s family in our thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Keith, Audrey, Emily and Ben.

Special guy to all of us in Thirsty Third. A friend to all he met. Always there with a smile and a laugh. He got me through “Electrical Engineering” and I got him through “Middle East Politics”. Certainly not a fair trade! Rest In Peace, my friend!

My dear son, David, words cannot tell you how much I loved you, I will miss our phone calls it was always so good to talk and laugh with you. You were my first born, and a great child and so much fun to talk with you, I know you were so happy with Erin. I am sure Dad was waiting for you with open arms in Heaven and is showing you around. I loved you dearly and I am having such a hard time putting this into words. Seems like you always handled all the things that were handed to you. I am praying that you were not in pain and passed peacefully. I will always love you. See you later, love Mom.

Dave inspired me during my formative years and it still carries on to this day. He and I attended Central High School together, and he possessed a unique mix of brilliance and humility, with a huge helping of excellent humor topping it off. He was a brainiac; you don't become vice president of Math Club by being slow on the uptake. But before you could write him off as a nerd, his smile and fun personality would grab you and hold on. He was funny as hell, and just plain fun to be around. He was living proof that you could be super intelligent yet still attract many, many friends. Dave showed all of us that you could have it all.

I was no surprise that the Naval Academy scooped him up. Everyone knew Dave was going places. Then fate struck a terrible blow, and his future changed beyond recognition. Fate can be extremely cruel, and it was swinging for the fence this time.

Yet at the same time, fate can also bring wonderful gifts that you thought were long lost. Dave and Erin were THE couple in high school. I know we were all young and immature, but they struck everyone as being meant to be together. You had to be with them and feel it to understand it. After high school, their lives took them on different paths, and they went their separate ways. For years and years. It took a while, but the universe being what it is, they reconnected and remained each other's soul mates until the day of Dave's passing. Their bodies and their souls were inseparable, up until the very end.

Fate can rob you, but it can also enrich you immeasurably. My belief is that but for Dave's accident, he would not have reconnected with Erin and found his true, lasting happiness. A door closes. A window opens. He suffered such a terrible loss, yet he reunited with a love that most of us will never be fortunate enough to experience. That is the memory I will always have of Dave, and I will never forget him.

Dear Erin, I am sorry for the loss of your husband. I am glad you were able to reconnect in the past years, and it is a blessing that Dave spent his last decade with his true love. His affection for you while at the Academy was evident, and you should know he often spoke of his high school sweetheart. I also remember his fondness for science fiction... and a game (or two) of cribbage . Though I never did understand “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” he did, and his laugh was truly genuine. Thinking of it now brings back a smile. It is a shame that Dave was never able to finish his Naval career, as I am sure he would have been one of the Class of 84’s absolute best. Dave’s smile was sincere, so was his willingness to help. What was difficult for most always came easy to him, and that made him perfect for the role of unofficial class tutor. I will always be thankful for the 3 years I lived with and got to know Dave. I send a hug and my prayers to you and your entire family. May the pain you feel today be replaced with the loving memories you shared together.

Oh, Erin and Marang Family - I wish there was a way to lessen your grief! I'm sure a flood of lovely memories and stories will surround you in the days ahead... to be the bridge to carry you over the chasm of grief. I remember how enamored Erin and Dave were in the "young years" and all of the dreams that lay ahead. I will pray for Dave's soul in his journey to heaven. I especially pray for those on earth who most need the comfort and peace during this transition: Erin and the Marang family. Thank you for sharing the journey and memorial service with us and allowing us to pray with/for you! Love from afar!

Dear Erin, I am so sorry about Dave’s passing. It is so unfair that your time with him was cut short after all the trials you two endured. Your love and dedication two one another are an inspiration. May your loving memories bring you some measure of comfort. Please know there are many people who love and support you.

In memory of our kind, smart, humorous shipmate. Dave’s calm nature, diligent example, and ability to put things into perspective made plebe year easier and life at the academy better. Military members have a history of assigning corny nicknames to each other - it was an honor serving with our friend “Lemon”. Thoughts and prayers are with his family.
