Dominic Nompleggi Obituary

Dominic J. Nompleggi, MD, PhD

WORCESTER - Dominic, "Dom," always quiet and deliberate in action, left this earth in the same manner. He fought the good fight for nearly five years and he died peacefully at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, on August 27, 2021 surrounded by his loving wife and children.

Dominic J. Nompleggi was born in Boston on May 1, 1950 to Dominic and Concetta "Tina" (Annessi) Nompleggi. He is survived by his wife Ann E. Brown and two daughters, Victoria "Tori" and Elizabeth "Libby". Dominic, an only child, leaves 4 nieces and 3 nephews as well as other extended family members.

Dr. Nompleggi lived in the Boston area. He graduated from BC High and then moved to Washington DC to attend Georgetown University. He spent nearly 14 years at Georgetown earning a BA in 1972, a MS in 1974, a PhD in 1977, and a MD in 1982. After completing his medical education, he returned to Boston to complete postdoctoral training; Dr. Nompleggi completed his internship and residency at New England Deaconess Hospital. He served as Chief Resident at the hospital prior to completing clinical and research fellowship in Nutrition and Gastroenterology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston. His advanced training was completed in 1991.

Shortly after completing his training, he joined the UMass Memorial Medical School and Hospital in 1991. Dr. Nompleggi served on the staff for 30 years. He served as the Clinical Chief of Gastroenterology until 2004 and then the Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology for the remainder of his tenure. Professionally, he served on multiple system leadership committees including the UMass Memorial Medical Group Board of Trustees and the Compliance Committee. Dr. Nompleggi was a beloved member of the staff; he served as a mentor, educator, clinician, and friend to all. He will be remembered for his calm and inclusive demeanor, his thoughtful leadership, and his ability to make everyone feel special. He loved being a physician and cherished all the moments of his tenure.

Dr. Nompleggi moved to Worcester in 1994 with his wife Ann. Together they raised two daughters who were his pride and joy. He loved being a father and cherished each milestone his daughters achieved. As a family they loved to travel, seek out wonderful places to dine, and entertain family and friends. He was an active member of the community serving on boards including the Worcester Club and the Worcester Art Museum. Dr. Nompleggi was a member of Tatnuck Country Club, The Worcester Club, The Argonauts and AOA.

The family would like to thank all of the special people who helped him during this time, especially his friends Charlie, Fran, Jim, and John, in addition to his work family, including Chris, KB, and Maria who provided support and camaraderie. Finally, we must not forget his medical team including the many nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists, and physicians who provided such excellent care. We especially want to recognize two physicians: Robert Mayer, MD, who was Dom's oncologist at the DFCI, and Scott Swanson MD, who was his surgeon at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. Collectivity, their treatment plan allowed Dom to continue to remain a productive and valuable asset to his community and family.

Yes, Dom, Dad, you are loved and will be missed by many but especially by your girls!

Visiting Hours are Tuesday, September 7th from 4:00-7:00 pm at Callahan, Fay & Caswell Life Celebration Home, 61 Myrtle Street. I was sorry to hear of Dom's passing. We had many talks and laughs through the years I worked with him in the 90's. He loved his work but truly wanted a family. I'm so happy for Dom that he ended up having it all. I'm sorry for your loss but I'm sure his wife and children know they were what made his life good. I'm sorry for Dom that he was taken too soon. Totally unfair. He was a nice, gentle, kind and funny man.

I was so saddened to hear of your loss. Dom was a compassionate, thoughtful, thorough and kind doctor who took care of me for over 20 years. His care and guidance was exceptional and I am fortunate to have known him. As a physician myself, we would talk about mutual areas of interest and always our families. He held his family above all else. Please accept my deepest condolences.

Indeed, Dom was a special person. The obituary captures well his calm, welcoming demeanor. There was nothing pretentious about Dominic, despite his success and extraordinary intelligence. We were blessed to call him friend. Peace to Ann and love to Tori and Libby, who were gifted with such a lovely man to call 'Dad'.
