Elizabeth Gauthier Obituary

Elizabeth T. (Voutour) Gauthier, 110, of Northbridge, died peacefully on Friday, February 10, 2012, in Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital, Westborough.

Her husband of 45 years, Ulric Gauthier, died in 1973. She leaves a son, Edgar A. Gauthier, with whom she lived; nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Alice Drolet of South Grafton and by two brothers: Edward Voutour and Edgar Voutour, both of Northbridge. She was born in South Grafton on June 5, 1901, a daughter of the late Marcel and Olive (LeBlanc) Voutour and was raised there and educated in Grafton schools. She moved to Northbridge in 1959.

Mrs. Gauthier worked as a cloth inspector at Wuskanut Mills, South Grafton, for many years. She then worked as a hat decorator at the Kartiganer Hat Shop, West Upton, for several years.

She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Parish, Northbridge, and of its former Sodality of the Ladies of St. Anne. A supporter of the Diocese of Worcester Haitian Apostolate Adopt-A-Student Program, she has sponsored the Catholic education of a young Haitian girl in Les Cayes, Haiti. In 2010, she was honored by the Haitian Apostolate with its Humanitarian Award. At the time of her death, Mrs. Gauthier was ranked as the 64th oldest supercentenarian in the world by the Guiness Book of World Records.

Her funeral will be Wednesday, February 15, from Turgeon Funeral Home, 80 School St., Northbridge, with a Funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St. Peter's Catholic Church, 39 Church Ave. She will then be buried beside her beloved husband in St. Patrick Cemetery, Whitinsville. Dear Edgar, I just heard the news. I am filled with a deep sadness in her passing, yet a joy in having known and loved her. I remember so many conversations that I had with her about sewing, cooking, and her travels in Mexico. I will treasure the handwritten recipe cards that she gave to me. The world has truly been blessed by her presence for 110 years. I consider myself honored to have been her neighbor, and to have learned so much from her. I have no doubt that she is amongst the angels. Love, Barbara Rugo Focht

Joanne and I were deeply saddened to learn of Elizabeth's death this week. Ed, your mother was a wonderful woman who personified grace and dignity. We were honored to share her 105th and 110th birthday celebrations. Northbridge, the Commonwealth, and America were blessed to have her with us for so long exemplifying how to live life to the fullest.

Dear Edgar, I was sad to hear that your mother had passed away but am glad that you two were able to be together for so many years. I think of you every time I see photos of you in the Bancroft Bulletin! Remember how we did book reports in the car going to school? Hope you are still getting to travel. Be well and remember all your good memories.

Dear Ed, Elizabeth, Mrs. Gauthier, Betty, Mother Gauthier =very special lady. Edgar = very special son. Wednesday we will celebrate her life but today Paul and I have a deep sense of sadness that she is no longer a part of our lives in the same way. Mrs. Gauthier was a source of inspiration in general and loveliness in particular. It was an honor when she called me her adopted daughter - one of many I'm sure. Go with God and rest in peace.
