George Summers Obituary

George J. Summers, 83

Upton - George J. (Tucker) Summers, 83, a lifelong Upton resident, passed away as peacefully as he had lived, on January 4th, 2019, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Worcester, holding the hand of his wife of 63 years, Margaret A. (Kneeland) Summers.

Born August 21, 1935, to Mary Ellen (Van Riper) and William Reed Summers, he was the youngest of eight children. He is predeceased by six of his siblings: Janet Stockwell (and her husband Richard), Mary Strachen (and her husband James), William Summers, Barbara Knapik (and her husband Eugene), Cecelia Grynsel (and her husband Edward) and Charles Summers. He is survived by a brother John Summers (and his wife Gloria) and a sister in law, Loretta Costello Summers.

Educated in the local Upton Grammar school, George attended high school at Worcester Boy's Trade. At the age of sixteen, he left school and became a self-made man. In 1952, he went to work driving trucks and operating heavy equipment for local construction companies. In 1962, George bought his first truck "Ol' Slow Poke" and started his trucking business, which now boasts 6 trucks and continues today as George J. Summers Trucking, Inc.

In 1952, George embarked on an auto racing career as a hobby. For thirty -one years, he raced up and down the east coast from Maine to Martinsville, VA. He had over two hundred career victories, a hundred of them at the Seekonk Speedway, where he holds the title of "Most Career Wins" in the racetrack's history. He also holds the title for the "Most Consecutive Wins" in one season at the same track. At Seekonk, George also won two track championships, the first one with the Ken Curly modified #31 in 1967. The second championship was seven years later in 1974, in the Connie LaJoie modified #21. In 1976, George won the Governor's Cup Open Competition Series in Oxford Plain, ME. driving the W.D Smith late model #35. He won the last two races of his illustrious career in the Art Barry modified #21 at Oxford Plains Speedway and the following weekend at Thompson Speedway in Connecticut.

Upon his retirement from racing, George became an avid golfer and was a member of the Westboro Country Club.

George was inducted into the New England Auto Racing (NEAR) Hall of Fame, the Seekonk Speedway Wall of Fame, and the North East Motor Sports Museum, in Louden, NH, where his Connie LaJoie modified #21 is on display. This February, he was to be inducted into the Living Legends of Auto Racing Hall of Fame in Daytona Beach, Florida.

In addition to his wife Margaret, George is survived by his four children: George Jr. of Somerville, MA, Mary Summers Cortese and her husband Joe of Upton, Richard Summers and his wife Natalie of Upton, and Kathie Summers Grice and her husband Roy, of Cumberland, ME. He is also survived by his four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Ever the family man, whenever he was racing, his family would travel with him from one race track to another during the racing season. When he wasn't racing, he was very much invested in the aspirations and activities of his children and much later on, in those of his grandchildren. It should also be noted that in his 31 years of racing, George never missed a Sunday mass. Wherever he and his family were on a given Sunday, they would attend a mass at one of the local churches before the racing event that day.

His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, January 12th, in St. Gabriel the Archangel Church "The Farm", 151 Mendon Street, Upton. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 11th, from 3 to 8 PM in the Williams-Pedersen Funeral Home, Inc., 45 Main Street, Upton.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to either the St. Gabriel Building Fund, made payable to St. Gabriel Church, 151 Mendon Street, Upton, MA. 01568 or to the North East Motor Sports Museum, 922 Rte. 106, Louden, NH. 03307.

To Tucker“s family: like so many who knew Tucker I will never forget him. That huge smile that he had and what Mary has was the first thing I remember. He was the head of such a wonderful family. Maggie was a Saint. Representing the family and Summer Trucking she was so generous to so many , the Mendon-Upton Schools being one of them. As Athletic Director when I needed help Maggie and Summer Trucking was always there. Now Mary fills that role as she sponsors my golf tournament that raises funds for the athletes of Nipmuc Regional. The family tradition continues in support of the people of Mendon and Upton.
Thank you Tucker and Maggie and Mary. We all need to take a clue from you. Help each other. God Bless.

George was a special friend. He was always thoughtful and no matter what was going on in his life George would smile when he came to Seekonk. In his younger days and Unless he didn't win it would not be a good thing. But, even then, his competitors were his friends, lifetime friends. He and Maggie loved to visit Seekonk. They would always send my mother the most beautiful bouquet of flowers on her birthday, which incidentally was George's birthday also. The bond between my parents and the Summers Family will never be forgotten. They were two winning teams, on and off the track. Role models for those in Auto Racing. My love to you George. You and your gentleman ways are very missed by this lady. God Bless and Rest Easy dear friend.

George Summers,
The Winningest Driver......at Seekonk Speedway, on and off the track where ever he went in this life. At home, in life, to his friends, Tucker was the best. He is an immeasurable and profound loss to all of us that knew him. Grief is the last act of love we have to give those we have loved. Where there is great grief there is great love.

George "Tucker" Summers, known to all as the winningest driver, that is his title in Stock Car Racing. I thought to myself just recently, my friend George is almost the same age. Still, in thought, just last summer, look how well George is doing. He had fallen just this last summer and really put some damage on his leg. He had it all bandaged, but able to attend his favorite Modified races at Seekonk. He shrugged off his injury and before long it seemed all was fine again. But, now only a few months since. George is gone. Gone forever in my life and in his families. Such a wonderful and caring large family. I can't imagine not seeing him at the races ever again. We never know how close we could possibly be to that last day when we must leave this earth. And So, I say, I will have lots of memorable memories. For Tucker had a stunning career in auto racing. Where making a name for himself was part of his legacy. Many of his fans followed his career and loved to watch him race. To see his moves in a race car, was so exciting and so smooth with his spectacular moves. Along the way, Tucker made lifelong friendships with his peers, his pals, his rivals. He was known as a fierce driver that many a car builder felt honored to have him take the seat of their race car. The list goes on, Art Barry, Connie Lejoyie, Frank Federichi, Ken Curley were just a few. He took the time to take Frank aside to teach him all he knew to help Frank learn how to turn left. Tucker and Maggie would take their kids in toe where ever they went racing in those early years. Making friends where ever they went. Making bonds with so many racing families, and along the way, their kids made their own friends while growing up in the racing community through the years that have turned into decades. The tradition carried on through Rick Summers, Tucker and Maggie's younger son. The family was there again to support his successful racing career. The Summers family continuously active in auto racing through all these many years. With accolades of trophies and inductee in NEAR Hall of Fame, the North East Hall of Fame, the Wall of Fame at Seekonk. And so it goes. The Seekonk Speedway Family extends their profound sadness and grief in the untimely loss of Tucker at this time. Tucker will never be forgotten in racing as an Auto Racing Champion and as a friend. Tucker has left the building but he will always be in our memory and always hold a place in our hearts. The Seekonk Speedway Family and Venditti Family

Mrs. Summers, Mary & Joe: my sincere condolences. I became friends with George after moving in to GossPond; friendly times at BBQ's and his sponsorship of Upton LL Baseball teams that I coached. He truly was a "man" whom I respected very much. My congratulations to you Mrs. Summers, Mary and your brothers and sisters in having such a fine man as a Husband & Dad. You are truly blessed. Am sorry to be in Florida and unable to visit with you during this difficult time but know that my thoughts and prayers are with Tucker, and with you all. Jerry Treem

They don't come any better than Tucker. Both he and and Maggie were always supportive of my efforts as the AD at Nipmuc and help in fundraising for my annual golf tournament for the Mendon/Upton youth athletic programs. What a wonderfully guy that loved to play golf and race cars. Upton so fortunate to have had such a great guy as Tucker and his wonderful wife and family. We all will miss his round smiling face and his love of life.Jim Grant

It is with great sadness learning of the passing of my friend Georgie and a great race car driver. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Maggie and his children and extended family. He will always be remembered for his great accomplishments behind the wheel of a race car. To Maggie remember all the great times you two had together. The checkered flag has flown.
