Helen Cocozzella Obituary
Holden - Our beloved Helen Marie (Peter) Cocozzella, 74, of Holden died Thursday November 12, 2015 at UMASS-Memorial Medical Center, Worcester.
She leaves her husband of 43 years, Dr. Joseph B. Cocozzella; two sons, Dr. Joseph M. Cocozzella and his wife Laura, and Michael P. Cocozzella; her grandson, Jack Joseph Cocozzella; three sisters, Elaine C. Peter, Barbara D. Peter-Whiting and Theresa B. Foley. She was predeceased by her daughter, Lisa M. Cocozzella, and by her parents, Simon P. and Helen M. (Bonczyk) Peter. Helen was born and raised in Worcester and graduated from St. Mary's High School. She then pursued laboratory technical training at St. Vincent Hospital and worked in prostaglandin research in St. Louis, the city where she met her husband. Afterwards, she learned office billing techniques to assume the role of managing her husband's medical practice, despite her busy schedule at home with three young children.
Those who knew Helen described her as being a big-hearted, giving person. As a mother, she gave all of her heart to her three children, whether it was organizing family vacations, cooking elaborate holiday meals, or the daily grind of driving the family all around Worcester for various activities. Later she relished her role as a grandmother to Jackie Joe, often saying, "I just love that little boy!" To her friends, she was loyal and giving, particularly of her talent for knitting scarves, sweaters, and blankets. Her family members love hearing, "I remember Helen, she knitted me a scarf." She exemplified living a meaningful life through her connection to people and animals, never hesitating to give of herself to others. Those close to her knew her deep respect for all life. A favorite saying of hers was, "Remember, a life is a life." She bravely handled her final years with dignity and befriended her caregivers with her unwavering sense of humor and respect. Heaven is about to get a lot of scarves...
The funeral will be held on Monday November 16, 2015 from HENRY-DIRSA FUNERAL HOME, 33 Ward St, Worcester with a Mass at 10:30 AM in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 33 Ward St, Worcester. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours in the funeral home are Sunday November 15, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Worcester Animal Rescue League, 139 Holden St, Worcester, Ma, 01606.
