Herbert Kennan Obituary

Herbert W. "Stretch" Kennan, 82, passed away Jan. 13, 2010 in Autumn Village Nursing Center. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Gertrude M. (Nealer) Kennan; two sons: Herbert Kennan Jr. of Oakham and Randy Kennan of Teluride, CO; a daughter, Joy Quist of North Brookfield; two brothers: James & Richard both of North Brookfield; two sisters: Kathleen Crevier of Warren and Cecilia Daniels of North Brookfield; 5 grandchildren:, Joe, Heather, Cory, Herbert III & Marcy; 2 great grandchildren: Destiny and Hayden; many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Harry. Herb was born in Bellows Falls, VT, the son of Herbert E. & Evelyn (Shumway) Kennan. He attended Rutland Elementary School and North Brookfield High School. Herb was a WWII Nay Veteran serving in the Islands of Okinawa and Guam and he worked at Norton Co. in Worcester for 38 years traveling extensively before retiring in 1989. He was a former member of the VFW & served on the Conservation Commission for many years and many other civic committees. Herb was a longtime usher and a member of St. Josephs Church. His love of gardening and greenhouses gave him much pleasure and joining the Barre Farmers Market where he made many friends along the way.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend calling hours on Monday, January 18, 2010 from 9:30-10:30 AM in Pillsbury Funeral Home, 44 Gilbert St., N. Brookfield. The funeral for Herb will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM in St. Josephs Church, 296 Main St., N. Brookfield. Burial will follow with Military Honors in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made in his name to St. Josephs Church, 28 Mt. Pleasant St., N. Brookfield, MA 01535 or to the Diabetes Assoc., PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

Gert, my sincere sympathy to you and the family. Herb will truly be missed. Herb will long be remembered for his conviction and contribution to the Town of North Brookfield. Never did he hesitate at town meetings to ask the Selectmen questions relative to an article which brought clarity to voters. He made Conservation a dedication I'm proud to have worked with him.. Herbie was a great man to work with during my career at Norton Co. He would always share a little tip or trick to make a project go easier. Being the youngster in the crafts department, that meant alot to me, when a senior person would do that for me. My sincere condolences to his family and his church family as well.
