Joan Doherty Obituary

Joan M. (Kelley) Doherty, 79, of Ivernia Road, passed away at home on Wednesday, December 1, 2010. Her husband of 44 years, Paul J. Doherty, died in 2000.

She leaves behind two sons, Paul J. Doherty, Jr. and his wife Trish of Danielson, CT and John M. Doherty and his wife Ellen of Holden; a daughter, Cathleen A. Doherty of Holden; a son-in-law, John J. Richinick, Jr. of Holden; a sister, Eileen Nikosey of Northborough; and 7 grandchildren, Jennifer, Michele, Catherine, Jack, Paul, Michael and Declan. Two daughters, Maryellen Richinick and Ann Doherty predeceased her.

Mrs. Doherty was born and raised in Worcester, daughter of John F. and Mary Ellen (Fleming) Kelley, and lived in Worcester all of her life. She graduated from Commerce High School in 1949, the Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing in 1952 and earned a B.S. in Nursing from Clark University. She was a dedicated school nurse for 29 years with the Worcester Public School System including Clark Street School, retiring in 1996.

She was a former board member of the Hahnemann School of Nursing Alumni Association; was a member of the Catholic Nurses Association, Our Lady of the Rosary Church, and the St. Christopher's Church Women's Club. An avid swimmer, she was an active member of the Greendale YMCA and cherished the years she spent teaching her grandchildren how to swim. She loved her family, traveling and Saturday nights out with her friends.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, December 3rd, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. The funeral will be held on Saturday, December 4th, from the funeral home with a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 23 Fales St., Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the NECC (The New England Center for Children), 33 Turnpike Road, Southborough, MA 01772-2108, or on-line, www.necc.org.

It was pleasure to know your Mom. I enjoyed swimming at the Y with her. She always talked about you and your son. You were such a wonderful daughter
and did so much with your mom. She told me about the trips you took together and all your fun days of shopping. You are one of the most devoted daughters that I know of.

As I was in the hospital a few weeks back, I shared a room with Joan and found out that she and my mom Elinor Fleming Muhr were 1st cousins....she was such a up beat person and everybody enjoyed her quick humor.So sorry to hear of her passing and it was a pleasure to meet my 2nd cousins. My mom being in Naples Florida at this time wanted you all to know you are all in her prayers, also to Eileen.
