I would like to send my thoughts and prayers to the family of Mr. Flaherty. John Flaherty was one of the kindest men I had known. He was my assistant principal while I was a student at Burncoat Sr,. High during the late 70's. I loved him for his art of conversation, genuine care and concern for who we were as not only students but also as people. He was stern, yet loving. It was during one of those conversations when he stopped by my lunch table that he found out we shared a common bond, he had coached my older brother, Richie Holmes at Commerce High. He had not known Rich was my brother because my last name was Pitts, but upon learning that he took me aside and spoke to me fondly of my brother, who was killed 4 years earlier. Mr. Flaherty spoke to me fondly of who my brother was while at Commerce and what type of young man he was during that time. He painted a clear picture of what he meant to him and how now, knowing I was Richie's kid sister, he would keep an even sharper eye out for me. I loved talking to him about basketball, sports, life and education. He loved talking about his family and the many people we knew in common. On the rare occasion I would be running late to class, he would always appear and say get a move on and you better not be late. John Flaherty was just a good man. I adored him and am deeply saddened by his passing. May God bless receive him with the very love he gave to me while at Burncoat.

I lost a friend yesterday and was looking up the funeral arrangements. She too was from Shrewsbury. I read John's obituary and wanted to comment on what a wonderful man he was. To have dedicated his life to students and learning as he did. You must be very proud of the life he led and the love you shared. May he rest in peace and may you find comfort in your memories. God bless you all.

was so surprized to learn of Mr Flaherty's passed that I forgot to let you know how i knew him. He was my physics teacher in 1956, when i was a junior at commerce high. He was a great teacher and an outstanding basketball coach. He had the nicest smile. His children must be quite proud of him too. Caroline Stenquist Swope, Class of 1957
