John J. Mullaly, 66

MILLVILLE - John J. Mullaly, 66, of Central St. died Tues. Jan. 14 at UMass Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Kathleen F. (Maher) Mullaly, 4 children; John M. Mullaly of Milford, Paul F. Mullaly and his wife Anne of Millville, Erin P. Vinacco and her husband Joseph of Millville, and Brian P. Mullaly and his wife Carol Anne of Millville; 7 grandchildren who called him "Pa"; Alex, Tyler and Hannah Mullaly, Nicholas, Julia, Amanda, and Lucas Vinacco and 6 siblings, Michael Mullaly and his wife Jani of Blackstone, Kathleen Pooler of Norwich, CT, Mary Scungio and her husband Joseph of Millville, Edward Mullaly of Uxbridge, Joseph Mullaly and his wife Doreen of Millville, and Margaret Corriveault and her husband Michael of Blackstone.

Born in Woonsocket, RI on Sept. 11, 1947 he was the son of John and Mary (Hession) Mullaly and lived in Millville all of his life. He graduated from St. Mary's Central Catholic High School in Milford. He also studied fire science at Quinsigamond Community College and earned his degree in business mgmt. at Johnson & Wales College. He became a Jr. Firefighter for the town of Millville at the age of 16, following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps. He became a Firefighter for the next 48 years, serving as Chief for 28 of those years. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during Vietnam.

John was proud to be part of the brotherhood of Firefighters. He was instrumental at collecting monies to build the Fire station on Main St. in 1971 and was most proud of his efforts to start the department's ambulance service in 1987. He served as the chairman of the training committee to develop a new fire fighter training program, which became the statewide model used at the Massachusetts Fire Academy. He was passionate about the safety of his men and his community. John also worked for JJ Nissen Baking Co. in Central Falls, RI and Worcester, MA from 1973-1996. He enjoyed being with his family, the occasional trip to Foxwoods Casino and traveling. He was a fan of the Red Sox and the Patriots.

His funeral will be held from Tancrell-Jackman Funeral Home, 35 Snowling Rd. Uxbridge on Mon. Jan. 20 with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Augustine's Church, 17 Lincoln St.,Millville. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Uxbridge. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sun. Jan. 19 from 4-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to the UMMF – Nath-Bone Marrow Transplant Program, UMass Medicine Development Office, 333 South St., Shrewsbury, MA 01545.
