It's hard to fathom that another year has come and gone since the passing of Joe and Caroline. A few months ago I bought a new truck. I decided to put vanity plates on the vehicle and was contemplating what I wanted them to say. I then remembered that Joe had plates on his truck that read SGT JOE. So I applied to the Registry for the plates and they were available and I received them shortly after. I proudly display those plates as reminder of my service to the PD but also as a tribute to my good friend Joe's legacy and memory as well. Semper Fi my friend. Rest in peace Joe and Caroline

I miss you and Grammy every single day. As I get older I've begun to see qualities in myself that remind me of you. I feel overwhelming pride just knowing it's a beautiful part of you that continues to live in me and I get to share it with the world. Your love, compassion, and humanity.. your legacy. It's hard to believe another year has passed since I last wrote a message on this forum. Many do not know this but when my son became the K9 officer for the Warren Police Dept. and we picked up his K9 he decided to name the K9 "Murray" in honor of Joe Murray. My son is living in Florida now and working for a Sheriff's Dept.. "Murray" is with him, although he is retired as a K9. Rest in peace Joe and Carolyn you are missed.

Remembering when we used to call Joe Murray "PaPa Smurf" because he was the oldest officer on the department and we used to wear powder blue uniforms at one time. Joe was always full of wit and wisdom and was a great mentor to me on how to be a good leader. One day while my wife and I were at a tag sale we saw a coffee mug that had a picture of PaPa Smurf. We had to buy it for Joe. A few days later he stopped by the station and I met him outside in his car. I presented the mug to him and he smiled, held it up high and said loudly. "Smurf" and we both laughed. His wife, Carolyn, sitting in the passenger's seat smiled, looked at us both, and said "You guys are crazy" and we all laughed. God rest your souls Joe and Carolyn. You are missed.

This is for Colleen Connors:
Colleen, I'm sorry to hear about your father. I hope we can keep sharing memories and continue to remember the legacy your father and my grandfather left behind.
My dad (Brian Murray) asked me to share this with you. I'm sure you've seen it before, but it's always a nice reminder of what incredible men they both were.

Dear Murrays, I was cleaning out my Dads top dresser drawer, were he kept his treasures. I thought this would crack you up. My Dad passed away this month. I have tons of fun memories of your parents visiting our house in Syracuse. You mom was the best and your Dad was really unique. He called my dad regularly. Their friendship was one of the best. Hope you are all well. My husband and I are on the Cape often. (Brewster) I hope to install my dads IWO JIMA license plate at the Chatham Squire. Take care, Colleen Connor

I can remember one night when Joe and I were on patrol together, probably in the early 90's, we got called to a disturbance on Bacon St. As we drove up Bacon st. behind the other officer on duty we could see a group of young men fighting. Most of them scattered upon our arrival, as the other officer (can't remember who it was)and I were placing two of the men under arrest, Joe was acting as the cover officer. Once I had my guy cuffed I turned to put him in the back of the cruiser and I did not see Joe. I asked the other officer where Joe went. He stated he didn't know. I walked a few steps to see where he was and here comes Joe with another young male, carrying him by the back of the belt and the collar of his shirt and plants the guy on the hood of the cruiser and handcuffs him. I aksed where did he come from, Joe said while i was covering you guys I heard some rustling over there and I saw this young lad hiding in the bushes. He was in his early 70's then. We miss you Joe. Mr. Murray was both my 5th grade teacher and my driving teacher when I reached high school. I have so many fond memories of him. They range from our singing the Marine's Hymn every morning in 5th grade to his eating an orange while teaching me how to drive. He threw the orange peel out of the car and then told me that when licensed, I would be responsible for any passenger's litter violation! I admired him so much!

I have never read so many testimonials to such a fine, warm, well respected human being. I am truly honored to have fit into this mans life, even if it was only a small corner. This photo of Mr. Murray is perfect to reflect who he was. His warm eyes and great smile. To the Murray family, you can truly be proud of your marine.

Mr. Murray meant a great deal to my family. The first year he taught in Warren he had a rascal named Greg Carr in his class. Mr. Murray influenced my father's life choices. When I reached 5th grade, he and my father (aka "grasshopper") would exchange notes through me, I became the milk girl of my class but most of all; I think Mr. Murray made an impression on me (and all of us) because he taught RESPECT. The stories are many because he influenced every kid he'd ever taught. I am forever in his debt. Thank you Murray family for sharing him with us and may you find comfort in these stories and memories.

My story about Mr Murray: After having him for a 5th grade teacher & being the last of 3 siblings to have that honor in our family, I went through a graduation from Quaboag, a wedding & the 2 births of our sons. After 14 or so years we found ourselves back in Warren. My husband walked our boys down to the P. Office & he came back puzzled. He told me, "Some guy came up to me & said, 'Those kids look like POLESHUKS. Are they?' So I told him "Yes. Who are you?" My hubby then asked, "Do you know a Joe Murray?" I told him he was my favorite teacher. Love you & miss you Mr Murray. RIP

Sorry for your loss to the Murray family. One of my more memorable times I shared with Mr Murray was the banter between my Uncle George O'Day (Army ww2) and the Marine Mr. Murray. Those two gentlemen would go back and fourth between who led whom into battle and who cleaned up the mess afterwards. The Brookfield Rod and Gun Club will never be the same to me. Their shared conversations always meant for a lively debate and you new they deeply respected each others gift to our wonderful country. Mr. Murray went to Rangely Maine years ago to help lay my dear Uncle George to rest. Mr.Murray with the deepest respect asked each one of us in attendance to say something (during the small gathering) that we cherished or loved about our Uncle,Friend,Dad,or cousin. He made sure that we all had something to say, Mr. Murray has always been a man to be admired and looked up to. He truly showed it on that memorable day.A truly humble man will be missed.

One of my fondest memories of Joe is the bright orange GMC that he and my Dad used to pile all of us kids into before heading to the Cape to open the house for the season.

Remember Reader's Digest had a feature titled My Most Unforgettable Character? Well, in my life I can count those on one hand and Joe Murray ranks in that group; a former Marine who taught self defense during the Korean War, he had that unm
istakable military bearing, when we worked together for two summers with Barnstable Police Dept., he was a weightlifter, very strong and well built, who quelled disturbances quite fast! We would chuckle during roll call in the morning, as he went out with extra tickets, armed to the teeth with extra ammo and the big 357 magnum; if you asked about the tickets, he'd reply, "The law is the law" No gray areas with Joe, right and wrong~they don't make many like Joe anymore~Godspeed to you Joe & Peace~Salute!

Mr. Murray was also MY 5th grade teacher. I was his coffee girl. One day I got upset with him for some reason, which I do not remember. I told him "The war is over, get your own coffee!". He made Marilyn Wallace get his coffee that day. I babysat their 8 children for 9 years. I was asked up until the day I got married if I was still able to babysit. I was his FIRST drivers ed. student. He use to make me back up (yes in reverse) from Brookfield to Warren on all of the back roads in his old Ford with a broken drivers seat! I was so short, I could hardly reach the pedals. To this day, I can back up better than drive forward! HAHA My family, including all of my grown children, still have great memories of camping with the Murrays on Cape Cod. I think of him often and will remember him in my prayers.

Most people are rightfully deserving of praise and gratitude when they find it in their hearts to dedicate some time in their lives to serve the community. Joseph Murray seemed to dedicate his entire life to serving mankind. His legacy will be ever growing because the ripples of his goodness spread through his family, friends, military and law enforcement service, and his teachings will continue to impact lives and hearts forever. I happen to be fortunate enough to be one of those people impacted. I know that I am a better person today because of Joseph Murray and I thank him and his family for that.
Rest in peace... and I'll thank you in person someday.

Mr. Murray was a very special teacher. My sister Joan always spoke well of him and how much he enjoyed the cookies that she would have our mother bake for him. My condolences to the Murray family. What can I say that hasn't already been said? Joe was great guy and coworker at the PD. I have many memories with him. He was around 70 then. He would do chin ups on the door jam. Break up fights with just words. He was tough as nails. He would crack me up when he would tell people running in the cross walk "No running or you will lose your recess." Joe and my other coworkers at the PD were the best. Joe always taught us something and led by example.

Mr. Murray was my 4th grade teacher. I few years ago I went home and saw him in the coffee shop and introduced myself. Joe Murray was one of the last of a generation that we will never see the likes of again. His military, educational, law enforcement, civic, and family exploits were a model for others to emulate. A disciplined, tough, squared away man who left an awfully impressive legacy. I was proud to be present when this legend was honored a few years back as "Brookfield Bombers Man of the Year." He seemed almost embarassed by all the praise that was heaped upon him that evening from the dozens of present and former police officers who were present and all thought so highly of this man. Joe Murray deserves to have a school named after him. A very solid man.

All who knew Joe, knows that he's a man of so many accomplishment in his 87 yrs. Many of you known him as your fifth grade teacher, or maybe from his time as a Marine, police officer, firefighter, or a selectmen, water commissioner or he may have even married you. But to me he was like my second dad. He remarried my Mom and Dad on their 50th anniversary and me and John on our 25th. He was so much to so many. He had many children, grandchildren and has been married to his wife, Blondie as he called her, or Caroline for many, many years. In all my years I have heard so many people tell me they had him for a teacher in school but I have never heard anyone ever say they disliked him and never heard any disparging comments about him, although no one could deny he was tough when it called for it and caring when needed. So Joe, Semper Fi...I will love you forever...rest easy.

I was a teacher at Quaboag when Joe was the assistant principle. I found him to be one of the most 'real' people I encountered in 33 years as a teacher. Semper Fi, Joe

We have shared Reunions, Happy and sad times. I pray that he is at peace and went ahead to prepare for us to join him. He was my Hero and part of me goes with him. God Bless you all. SEMPER FIDELIS! One of the most important roles
of a teacher is to create good citizens, and Mr. Murray excelled at that. I can still recite the Preamble, the Gettysburg Address, and "In Flanders Fields." He taught us so much about what it means to be an American. He will never be forgotten.

You were assigned to be my mentor starting on my first day at Warren Elementary (1970) and you were our #1 choice to perform our ceremony when Margaret & I decided to marry last year (2011). So many years filled with memories and stories...You are, and always will be, a legend. Peace.

It seems like just yesterday, Mr. Murray would call out "Joyce, go down to the basement and get me a cup of coffee" or, "Marcia, go down to the basement and get me a cup of coffee." Two sets of winding stairs made for little coffee remaining in the mug by the time this 5th grader got back upstairs with Joe's cup of joe. Mr. Murray would take one swig of the coffe and ask, "Woah, Joyce, where did you get this, out of a river???" To be honest, I used the bubbler to make up for what I spilled climbing up the staircase. Later on in life, I was married by Mr. Murray as a justice of the peace. He arrived up the fire escape of the 3rd floor in the winter time, and insisted on leaving in the same manner after the ceremony. Later, we would drive to the Cape and see Mr. Murray directing traffic in Hyannis. Fond memories of a true legend who spanned I believe 3 generations of students, who kept us patriotic with deep respect for our country, and who after inspecting for clean hands during lunch line, always replied when asked, "What's for lunch today, Mr. Murray?" -- "Fish heads and rice, my dear... fish heads and rice." Thank you, Mr. Murray for your service to your many students, to your country, to the many lives you touched and helped whether directing us where to go or helping some of us with our "I do's" -- and because of Mr. Murray, I never again talked in class after the one time Trisha and I wrote 100 times on the board, "I will not talk in class" -- it worked. He made the world a safer place everywhere he went, and taught us pearls of wisdom along the way such as, walk 1000 miles in a man's shoes before judging his path or gait. While my memories are fond and whimsical, my heart is with the family at this time of passing... and with deep respect I offer heart-felt condolences with much gratitude for having been a part of the vast community of people whose lives are forever touched by this legend of a man. We all thought the world of Mr. Murray, and he truly touched our lives in so many ways, making this world a better, safer, closer and kinder village. Praying comfort to the all the family, friends and people whose lives he touched profoundly, my sympathy with fondest of memories and deepest of respects, God bless --
