Leo Simard Obituary

Leo N. Simard

Worcester - Leo N. Simard, 90, of Worcester died Friday, December 4th at home surrounded by his loving family. He leaves his wife of 44 years, Ferne (Reid) Simard; his children, Jeffrey Capparella and Sherry Hannan (David) all of Worcester; and grandsons Robert J. Clark and Nicholas Capparella. He was predeceased by his daughter, Carolyn White; a brother, Rene Simard, his sister Leda Cofelice and a granddaughter, Crystal Clark. He also leaves his beloved dog Zippy and cat Alice.

He was born in Marlborough the son of Leo N. Simard, Sr. and Ora (Gravel) Simard. Leo was a veteran of the United States Army serving as a paratrooper with the 82nd Air Borne during the Korean War. He worked for the Worcester County Power and Light Company, Webster Square Station as an installer for several years. Leo also worked at the Smithsonian as a painter and as a pallbearer for O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home.

Leo was an avid golfer having had 3 Holes-in-One with his last one at the age of 88. He was a member of Hillcrest CC in Leicester and part of "The Growlers" golf group for many years and most often was able to "shoot his age". In his younger years, he played AAA Baseball as a starting pitcher and traveled all over the country. While in the Army he played football and was named "Golden Toe". Leo was a former coach for Senior Babe Ruth in Marlborough and Hudson, where he trained some future big names. In addition to his family and his athletic achievements he was a Friend of Bill W's for 45 years and helped many people during his time in recovery. Leo's famous saying was "it isn't WHO'S right, it's WHAT'S right" and he lived by those words. Anyone who knew Leo didn't just like him, they loved him!

His family wishes to thank the Jewish Healthcare Center for their in-home hospice care and a special thank you to "Dennis" his hospice nurse.

Calling hours are Saturday, December 12th from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in O'CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue followed by a service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Independence Hall, 59 South Street, Shrewsbury MA 01545.

After almost a year I and the many other growlers you played with still remise about you. We had some real great times on and off the course. Still thinking of you from time to time, especially how you controlled the slice(oops and I was corrected right away by Leo"it's not a slice it's a POWER FADE" ) Loved the guy and miss him

I had the pleasure to join the group on the Myrtle Beach trip in March 2019 and was able to spend time with Leo. We were cart mates on 2 of the days (no coincidence I assume) and I consider myself lucky to have shared that time with Leo. I learned so much. I am grateful for the time I had with Leo and got just a taste of his wisdom, humor and see his competitiveness in action. And yes, he did win the money both of those days.

Leo's legacy will live on for many years to come and his impact has deep roots.

Leo was definitely "one of a kind". A kind, gentle giant {and really good golfer} camouflaged by his gruff demeanor. He helped so many of us in the Fellowship and he excelled at taking our cash, not only in Myrtle Beach but in countless golf outings from Chicopee and Westover to the many courses where he "worked" in Central Mass. Leo, you will be sorely missed! My prayers and deepest sympathy to Ferne, Sherry and all of the Simard family.

Leo was a great power of example in my sobriety and I will be forever grateful for his friendship over the years. I miss him very much at meetings and on golf trips to Myrtle Beach and take comfort in the fact that he is in our picture library from all of our Bill S. Memorial Golf Tournaments. He will always be a part of my sobriety.

Leo,
You have been a great friend during my years in recovery, and have very fond memories. Golfing, attending meetings and just together having ice cream. Your sense of humor and out spoken way of getting me to see the right path. There are several golfers I recall while playing, you are added to my list. My prayers are with your family during these difficult days.
Your friend always,
Paul McGovern

I will forever cherish my friendship with Leo. We had so much fun on our Myrtle Beach trips as roommates. Leo is the only person I know who could skip a few holes to rest and still win all the money. His words and love will stay with me always.

Leo was a friend and a golf buddy. He always cared about people and kept in touch to remind us that life was tough sometimes, but always worth it.
He showed many of us how to live through it all. After meeting life’s challenges big and small, he always concluded with a good word and a laugh. He taught us how to laugh and smile our way through life. He always righted the ship, with a shake of the head and an acknowledgement of his Lord and Savior, “Jesus Christ.”
I’m sure he’s having a good laugh about it all now with Him now!
Please shine down some love and light on your dear friends down here, and get us some tee times up there. Thx Leo.
