Paul Sprague Obituary

Paul H. Sprague, 82, of Worcester, died Saturday evening, November 19, 2011 at the Holden Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Janet A. (Riordan) Sprague; two sons: David P. and his wife Donna and their children Michael and Laura of Sharon, and John M. and his wife Eileen and their children Kelly and Megan of Wellesley Hills, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Betty Jean Hunt of Raleigh, N.C.

Paul was born in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Howard W. and Geverna A. Sprague and lived most of his life in Worcester. Mr. Sprague attended Worcester Academy and Northeastern University. He was a Master Sgt., Co. B 181 Infantry of the Massachusetts Army National Guard where he served for 12 years.

Mr. Sprague was vice president of Standard Sign Co. of Clinton and before his retirement owned an Arnold Bread distributorship.

Paul was an active environmentalist and outdoorsman, loved history and travel, was an avid reader and enjoyed live theater. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends of all ages. His friendly smile and little wave made him the unofficial greeter at Holden Nursing Home.

The Sprague family would like to thank all of the staff at Holden Nursing Home. Their commitment and loving care is deeply appreciated.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 9 to 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, November 26 at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 111 Worcester Street, West Boylston. Burial at Rural Cemetery in Worcester will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Activities Fund of Holden Nursing Center, 32 Mayo Drive, Holden, MA 01520.

Janet, I'm so sad to hear of Paul's passing but understand and believe he is in a better place and he will be with you always. Danette told me of that last day and how she made him laugh and that is how I will remember him. You are a very strong and faithful lady and I hope your health improves now that you can concentrate on yourself knowing that Paul is in peace. I will miss seeing you both at the nursing home when I visit my Mom, Jeanne.

I am sorry for the loss of your husband and dad. I knew him from Holden nursing home and always appreciated and looked forward to his friendly smile and wave. My mom had been in there a few times for short term rehab 2007-2010 and she too passed away July 2011. I would visit my mom daily at lunch and supper when she was in Holden and Paul would always give me the wave, nod and smile. Sometimes I would be playing catch in the tv room with my mom and they would exchange the smile, nod and wave. Just wanted to say your husband and dads smiles brought me encouragement with my journey with my mom... I hope your fond memories of happier times see you thru this difficult period...
