Piet Zorge Obituary

Piet Zorge, 78, of Shrewsbury passed away peacefully Saturday, April 11th 2009 surrounded by his family at UMASS Memorial Hospital - University Campus.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Jean (Bodeman) Zorge of Shrewsbury; three sons, Frans Zorge and his wife, Michelle of Shrewsbury, Arthur Zorge and his wife, Pamela of Shrewsbury, and Michael Zorge of Worcester; two daughters, Joyce Crouse of Shrewsbury and Lynda LePoer and her husband, David of Shrewsbury. He also leaves seven grandchildren, Jessica Zorge and her husband, Jason Robitaille of Worcester, Jennifer Litchfield and her husband, Kevin; Erik Zorge, Ashley Zorge and Justin Zorge; Sydney LePoer and Caleb LePoer, all of Shrewsbury. He also leaves a brother, Alfons of Worcester and a sister Truus and her husband, Erik Croes of the Netherlands.

Piet was born in the former Dutch East Indies, son of the late Franciscus and Kim (Njoen) Zorge. He came from the Netherlands to the United States 50 years ago and lived 45 years in Shrewsbury. He was a member of Saint Mary's Parish. A Korean War veteran in the 2nd U.S. Infantry Division, (Second to None), he received many medals and commendations during his two tours of duty in Korea. He was a lifetime member of the South Works Post VFW 3657 in Worcester. He worked for 45 years at the former Coppus Engineering until the plant closed December 2006, at that time he was 76 years old.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, his greatest love was his family. Piet took great pleasure in traveling to Aruba with his beloved wife for their annual holiday. He enjoyed fishing and gardening and various activities with his family. He also found much joy being around his seven grandchildren and spending time at his second home in York, Maine. He had a passion for his Classic Cadillacs, and each year he looked forward to attending the Worcester Summer Nationals, various car shows and swap meets with his sons.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Mr. Zorge's family on Wednesday, April 15th from 5-8 P.M. in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. His funeral will be held on Thursday, April 16th with his funeral Mass being celebrated at 10A.M. in Saint Mary's Church, 640 Main St., Shrewsbury.
