Robert Bemis Obituary

Robert M. Bemis, 91, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011 at UMass Memorial Healthcare Center, Worcester following an illness.

He leaves his wife of 66 years, Hazel T. (Talbot) Bemis; two "grandsons" David G. & Daniel R. Murphy both of Paxton and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Bemis was born in Spencer, son of Robert H. and Mildred B (Bazata) Bemis. He was a direct descendent of Samuel Bemis, the first settler of Spencer (then Leicester) near the Seven Mile River, where the Bemis Memorial Park is now located on Route 9. He graduated from David Prouty High School and Becker Jr. College. He was employed by the former M.J. Whittal Carpet Mills in Worcester. He was also employed by Consolidated Beverages, Inc. in Auburn before retiring in 1985. After retiring, Bob volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program for 13 years as a driver. He was a Senior Past Master of Spencer Lodge AF & AM. He recently was presented a citation for being the oldest living Past Master of his Lodge. Bob served as a Mason for 58 years.

Mr. Bemis was a dedicated member of the Spencer Fire Department for 27 years, retiring as Deputy Chief. He was also secretary of the Fireman's Relief Association. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Spencer. He enjoyed nature and cared deeply for animals. He was an avid reader and enjoyed oil painting as a hobby. He was a loyal Boston Red Sox fan for over 80 years.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, Sept. 12 at 11:00 AM in the First Congregational Church of Spencer, 205 Main Street, Spencer. Burial will be private in Pine Grove Cemetery, Spencer at a later date. Calling hours are Sunday from 3:00-5:00 PM in J. HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospital, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114.

Hazel, I didnt know Mr. Bemis very long but I feel I knew him very well. I will miss my Wednesday afternoons sitting with him in the garage listening to Public Service radio while watching him tinkering with something or another. A great sense of humor and a caring heart is what I will keep from him. My heart feels for you. See you Wednesday
