Robert Shaughnessy Obituary

Robert E. Shaughnessy

Shrewsbury - Bob Shaughnessy would often tell family and friends 'Live every day like it's your last because someday you'll be right." Sadly Bob died unexpectedly from injuries sustained in an auto accident on Friday January 30, 2015.

Robert E. Shaughnessy was born in 1935 to the late John H. and Kathleen M. (Sanborn) Shaughnessy of Ashland, MA. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1953 where he was a standout athlete in both football and baseball. He played in the first Jimmy Fund Baseball game for the Ashland Junior Dread-Naughts in 1948. He turned down many athletic scholarships to attend Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston. He honorably served as a medic in the US Army in post WW II West Germany as part of the occupation troops. His patriotism continued throughout his life.

His love for travel enabled him to begin his career in the travel industry where he worked at Sullivan travel, World Airways, Diners Club, as well as the Nantucket Airport. While escorting a group on a cruise he met Martha (Marty) Skirven from Philadelphia, PA. The couple married in 1969 and recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.

He continued working for the travel industry until he opened 'The Place' Diner in 1977. In 1980, he opened the Boylston landmark The Other Place Pub, often referred to as the 'OPP' or 'The Pub'. He was looking forward to celebrating its 35th anniversary on March 1, 2015. Almost everyday except when traveling with his beautiful wife Marty, he could be seen working and enjoying its patrons many of whom became his lifelong friends.

Bob didn't count the minutes in life. He counted the laughs and he had many. He was proud of his Irish heritage and in 2012 was honored by the Worcester County St Patrick's Day Parade Committee by receiving the Agnes Sheehan Award. In the same year he also received the Shillelagh Award by the Leprechaun Society of Clinton. Both are community service awards.

Not only did he own a restaurant but he was also very active in the restaurant industry. He was a member of the Massachusetts Restaurant Association and served as its Vice President from 1988-1990. He also sat on their Board of Directors for several years. At the time of his death, he served on the Board of Directors for Hospitality Mutual Insurance Co.

Bob was a generous man. He made the world and central Massachusetts a better place. He was truly one of a kind. He will be missed.

In addition to his wife of 45 years , Marty, he leaves his daughters Kelly A. Dunlavey and her husband Bryan of Boylston. Debbie Shaughnessy Gorrie of Shrewsbury . Holly S. Richardson and her husband Chris of Shrewsbury. He leaves his grandchildren Shaughn , Shannon, Erin, Shane, Jake, Christopher, Carter, and Bryan; 2 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; numerous lifelong friends and his family at "The Pub."

Family and friends will honor and remember Bob's life by gathering for calling hours at Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center on Friday, February 6th 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday in Saint Mary of the Hills, 630 Cross Street, Boylston at 9:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

Bob would not discourage flowers. In fact he often talked about this day that has come and he wants his life celebrated. However, his legacy of charitable giving could be honored with gifts to the Boylston Lion's Club PO Box 50 Boylston, Ma 01505 or The Jimmy Fund Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168.

To Marty and Family, I am so sorry to hear about Bob's passing. I have been at for a family wedding in Mexico for the past few weeks and I just heard yesterday about the accident. I truly enjoyed my meeting and having the chance to talk and explore our Irish heritage, and how the great Corned Beef came about. May his travel to Heaven be short. Godspeed. Stephen & Maureen Quill.

To Marty,Debbie and the entire Shaughnessy family, We were so saddened at Bob's passing. We first went to the Pup after watching the ad on TV years ago featuring Bob and Mel. From the first time visiting the Pub, Bob made us feel like "family". It is our favorite place to be and we will continue to visit. Bob, we sorely miss you. May God shine down on your family and give them strength.
Sincerely,
Dennis and Jane Rantala

Bob, thank you for all the life lessons you shared with me over the years.
A personality that we will probably never experience again. The great wisdom you shared with so many you were more than a friend you were a mentor that gave us all the real meaning of "truth and spirit" for life, and done with such wit . I believe we'll all continue to learn from the lessons and the legacy of the words you left behind. You certainly left your mark upon the earth. How very grateful and thankful I am to have had the privilege of your friendship. Keeping it in my pocket until we meet again. Rest in Peace My Friend.

Very few are gifted as Robert Shaughnessy was
Wisdom he shared , wit that had us laughing, opinions that had us arguing, Bob brought out the best and the worst in all that he touched.
He knew what was important, family friends , loyalty and the meaning of life.
Robert Shaughnessy was unique. You knew when he entered a room even though you may not have seen him he had the gift of a strong aura his presence was felt.
He quietly gave of himself to the less fortunate not for fame nor gratitude, only for the shear pleasure he felt helping others.
Words can't capture the essence of a Robert Shaughnessy they can shed light on his persona they can paint an image. To know a character such as Bob is a gift a lesson in life he evoked every possible emotion from everyone he considered a friend and that list is infinite. The likes of a Robert Shaughnessy will not be duplicated.
The emotional pain of saying a final good by to Bob from his friends will hurt the sorrow his family is experiencing is uncomprehensible.
Knowing Bob was an experience that I am great full, thankfull for and the memories will make me a better person. May you rest in peace and have one adult beverage on me.
