Sean Hughes Obituary

Mr. Sean E. Hughes, of Worcester, died Friday, April 15, 2011 with his family gathered by his side after a brief battle with liver cancer. He was 52.

Sean was born September 10, 1958 in Worcester, son of the late Donald and Claire (Murphy) Hughes. He was a graduate of Shrewsbury High School, class of 1977. He then enlisted with the United States Army and served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division and with the Green Beret Special Forces. He married Susan M. Hunt on November 26, 1983 and together they began their lives in Shrewsbury before settling in Worcester for over 25 years.

He worked as a custodian for the Worcester Public School system for over 10 years. Previously, he worked for over 15 years with Boston's Local #223 Laborer's Union. Sean would often boast to his family and friends that he "built Boston" during his work on the Big Dig construction project.

Sean's life centered around family and he was devoted to his two sons. He treasured time spent with family on trips to Hampton Beach and Cape Cod. He fostered his special relationship with his brother and buddy, Kevin, who lovingly referred to Sean as Blue. He enjoyed tending to his home and worked hard each and every day. His family recalls with fondness Sean's strong affection for his routine naps as well. Sean was an avid New England sports fan and loyally followed Notre Dame football and Duke basketball. Raised by proud Irish parents from Boston, Sean loved all things Celtic and native to Ireland. Throughout his life he claimed every bit of his Irish heritage. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam (May he Rest In Peace).

He leaves his wife of 28 years, Susan M. (Hunt) Hughes; his sons, Adam D. and Joseph W. Hughes, all of Worcester; his siblings, Donna E. Simone and her husband, Carl, of Shrewsbury, Kenneth F. Hughes and his wife, Jane, of Brownsville, Vermont and Kevin P. Hughes of Worcester; his mother-in-law, Doris C. 'Memere' (Hebert) Hunt of Auburn; sisters-in-law, Sandra J. Larue and her husband, Richard, of Worcester and Sharon A. Hunt of Windsor Locks, Connecticut; nieces and nephews including Matthew & Erin Simone, Kaitlyn, Jillian and Benjamin Hughes and Elizabeth Hunt Towyenis.

Family and friends will honor and remember Sean's life by gathering for calling hours at Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 8:45 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint John's Church, 44 Temple Street, Worcester, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery.

Friends who wish to honor Sean's memory may contribute to the Sean E. Hughes Scholarship Fund, Holy Name High School, 144 Granite Street, Worcester, MA 01604.

Sue,
So sorry for your loss. Sean was a great guy. He always had so much pride and admoration for you and your children. He will be missed.

April 27, 2011

I worked with Sean about 12 years ago at South High. He was a great guy. I saw him about 6 months ago for the first time in a long time. He was a rugged individual and it's hard to believe he is not with us anymore. He had a vibrant personality and helped make our job at South High enjoyable. Our boss, Pat Curran, at South High passed away years ago also from the same dreadful disease. Pat and Sean left us with many pleasant memories and will truly be missed. My heart goes out to Sue and Sean's boys.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Sean's passing. I have wonderful memories of him back as far as 6th Grade. He was always kind and had that smile on his face. As we grew up, I remember being happy to see him either at school or down the park. Such a sweet guy.
My sincere condolences to all of the Hughes family. May Sean Rest in Peace.
God Bless.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Sean was a great guy; I enjoyed reminiscing with him about the 82nd Airborne.

I will never forget the day he rescued my son Ryan from our locked bathroom while I was at work. Amanda was so relieved and happy that Sean was around during the day if she needed help.

Sean will surely be missed by all who knew him.

If you need anything just let us know.

God bless you all.

All I can say is "What a great guy!" Sean laughed easily; was genuine, warm, and such a joy to work with. I could ALWAYS recognize his voice on the phone and everyone's eyes shined that much brighter when he made his rounds.

I am sorry to hear of his passing, but I am exceedingly happy that so many had the opportunity to share in his life, his joys and his triumphs. He was a blessing to many... a kind, kind man... and that is such a tribute.

He will be remembered fondly.

Our hearts and prayers are with you Sue, Adam, Joe and Kevin. I am so happy that I had several occasions that I was in Sean's presence, and shared so many great conversations with him at Auntie Helen and Uncle Peter's Dinner table and in the backyard at all the great cookouts we shared together. May God watch over each one of you and hold you close during this extremely tough time. May God Bless All of You. Sean May You Rest in Peace. You will be remembered in our Hearts Always.
