Sidney Plotkin Obituary

Sidney "Sid" Plotkin

WORCESTER - PLOTKIN, Sidney "Sid", passed away on August 15th, 2017, four days shy of his 94th birthday. He was the son of the late Sarah (Cohen) and Joseph Plotkin. The youngest of six siblings, he lived in Worcester for sixty years before moving to Hyannis on Cape Cod.

He graduated from Commerce High School in 1941 and enlisted in the US Army one week after Pearl Harbor, serving for four years-two in training in the US and two in India and China with the Signal Corps and Air Force, flying in B-25's as an aerial gunner/photographer. He married the love of his life, Evelyn (Levine) on December 9, 1943, and left her three days later on a "cruise" (as he put it) of 30 days, courtesy of Uncle Sam. She wrote him every single day he was overseas. Some days would go by without him receiving any mail and then dozens of letters would arrive all at once. Upon being discharged from the service in January 1946 he started a photography business in his home, which lasted until his retirement in 1987. Throughout the course of his forty year career he photographed the weddings, bar mitzvahs and family portraits of multiple generations of people throughout New England.

He leaves a daughter, Chaya Devorah (Karen) Bergstein, wife of Rabbi Chaim Moshe Bergstein of Farmington Hills, Michigan, and a son, Bruce and his wife Elisabeth Gold of Weston, Connecticut, nine grandchildren, forty-five great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Bessie Allentuch and Esther Becker, as well as two brothers, Jack and Abe Plotkin.

Active in community and religious organizations, he became President of the Worcester and Massachusetts Professional Photographers Associations. He also served as Commander of Worcester Post # 32, Jewish War Veterans and President of Temple Emanuel Brotherhood. He and his wife continued their leadership roles on Cape Cod at the Cape Cod Synagogue.

Funeral service will be on Thursday, August 17th at 12 Noon at The Cape Cod Synagogue, 145 Winter Street, Hyannis, Massachusetts, with interment to follow at Mosswood Cemetery, 280 Putnam Avenue, Cotuit, Massachusetts. Contributions in Sid's memory can be made to The Cape Cod Synagogue or to a charity of your choice.

I grew up in the fifties and early sixties in Worcester, and Sid was always there to take pictures of everyone - BBG, AZA, USY AND NEFTY and, of course, he was the in-house photographer for Queen Esther every year at the Bancroft Hotel. He knew a lot of us by name and always had a great smile on his face. He was the best of the best!!! Sorry for your loss
