Theodore Barbera Obituary

Theodore R. Barbera
Hollywood, Fl - Theodore Barbera of Hollywood, Florida, and formerly of Worcester, passed away on April 23, 2012.
Ted leaves his brothers, Raymond Barbera and his wife Doreen Donovan-Barbera of Worcester, MA, Charles Barbera of North Brookfield, MA and David Barbera and his wife Christine Barbera of Hubbardston, MA. Ted also leaves behind his beloved nieces and nephews, Brooke, Allison, Nicholas, Michael, Charles and Raymond. Ted also leaves behind a stepmother, Pina, a sister, Michelle and her daughter, Eleanor.
Ted was preceded in death by his dear mother, Carmelita and sister, Phyllis. He was also preceded by his stepmother, Barbara Joan.
Ted was born in Brooklyn, New York but was raised in Worcester. Ted attended Worcester Public Schools graduating from South High School in 1964. Ted graduated from Clark University in 1968 and received his master's from the University of Lowell in 1979.
Ted was a highly regarded music teacher in the Worcester Public Schools for almost 35 years, retiring due to health issues in 2007. Ted was involved in many activities relating to the love and teaching of music. Ted directed school orchestras, conducted numerous musical programs, and gave instrumental music lessons throughout his exemplary career. Ted also gave private instrumental lessons to many students throughout his lifetime.
Ted was an Air Force veteran, stationed in Mississippi in the 1970's.
Ted was a very grateful organ transplant recipient, receiving a liver transplant in 2005 which extended his life for seven more years. Although Ted was unable to donate any of his organs due to the damage from pancreatic cancer and chemotherapy, he did donate his body to science in the hope that it would be of help to researchers as they work on a cure for this devastating disease.
Ted touched the lives of the many thousands of school children whom he enthusiastically, creatively, and passionately taught for almost four decades. Ted will be greatly missed by his family, many of his former students, and his many friends.
Calling hours will be held at the Athy Memorial Home, on Friday, May 18, 2012 from 3 to 5 p.m. The burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ted's memory may be made to the Friends of Mercy Centre, Inc. P.O. Box 3410 Worcester, MA 01613, to benefit the Music Therapy Department at Mercy Centre.

Ted, Flakey, was like a father to me. He practically raised me. I don't remember a time before I knew him. He's always been there for me. Losing him was like losing a parent. I'll never be able to sing or hear symphony music without thinking about him.

May he rest in peace. I have wonderful memories of of him from Woodland St and Dartmouth St Schools....Thank you for giving me the confidence to get up and sing at the 6th grade talent show! He knew I was terrified but he made me feel at ease. Every time I hear the Mexican Hat Dance, I will smile and remember him. He was a once in a lifetime teacher that touches your soul. Love you Mr. B

Ted was my best friend...since we were six years old...just about 59 years.
He was an extremely talented musician and teacher, who was truly a renaissance man. For hours on end, we discussed politics, the economy, music, physics, religion, and so much more. Words cannot express how deep a hole now exists in my heart and mind. I will miss him and think about him for the rest of my time.

I was one of the lucky ones who was fortunate enough to have met Ted. He truly was a great guy. Even when battling cancer he remained upbeat and could still make my girls and I laugh and smile. I am fighting my own battle with cancer now and I keep thinking of Ted and the strength, hope and courage he had. I love you Ted and miss you! To your family members and loved ones - I am sorry for your loss. Bless you all.

Very rarely a man comes along who really touches so many lives in such a positive way. I only knew Mr. Barbera through elementary music class at Rice Sq School back in the 1980s - but he was often times mentioned throughout my entire life. He was without a doubt the most fun part of school growing up, and many others I know share that opinion. He made Saint-Saëns come alive around Halloween time when he would tell us the story accompanying Danse Macabre - and I use that story to this day with my kids. We love you Mr. Barbera - rest easy my man!

I met Ted in college in 1967 and we have remained best of friends ever since. He was truly a remarkable and talented individual who gave so many people joy and happiness through his music and unusual sense of humor. Ted always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes. He was truly a loyal friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

I was lucky enough to have had Mr. Barbera as a music teacher at Freeland Street School back in the early 80s. Come to find out he was a good friend of my dad's in elementary school. Later on, in high school, he happened to be my cab driver on ocassion. He was a gentle, kind and sweet man. My father always had nice things to say about him!

To his family, please know he made a difference as a teacher to this former student and now teacher in the WPS. God bless Mr. B...

Ted was my student (violoncello) then my roomate (Worcester, 1973-74); I had maintained a relationship with him up until the end. He and I were planning to meet in Florida soon. He was a very caring and intelligent person, not dealt a good set of cards, but he played them masterfully. He is greatly missed.
