Vincent Nocella Obituary

Vincent Nocella, 72

Worcester - Vincent Nocella, 72, of Worcester, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2020, at Saint Vincent Hospital, from complications due to COVID-19.

Vincent was born in Sessa Aurunca, Italy, son of the late Salvatore and Maria Grazia (Alicandro)

Nocella. Vincent grew up in Formia, Italy and immigrated to the United States at the age of 13 to settle in Worcester with his family. Here he attended Grafton St Junior High and North High School and met his best friend who would later become his brother-in-law Frank. Speaking no English, Vincent was still able to graduate with high honors and later attend the College of The Holy Cross, studying pre-med with a major in Biology on a full scholarship. After a two year stay in Rome, where he attended the University of Rome Medical School, Vincent returned to the States.

He moved to Tampa and opened a successful painting business. Over the years he shared his passion for soccer, coaching many teams, and was a mentor to many young talents. His best friend Dale was one of those, who then grew up to coach alongside him. While in Florida, he also had the privilege to help raise his niece Tanya whom he adored.

In the early 90's Vincent was involved in a car accident which left him quadriplegic. After many years he returned to Worcester and resided at the Odd Fellows Home. Vincent renewed his passion for literature and the languages, as he was fluent in English, Italian and French. About ten years ago Vincent began his artistic career, having found a way to hold a pencil and brush to draw and paint and a new passion was born. He loved to paint for his family and friends and proudly displayed his work throughout the Odd Fellows and at auctions to help raise money for charities.

He spent his evenings discussing politics on the phone with his "brother" Frank, checking in with his sister Anna and giving her his shopping list, and visiting with his godson Christian. Whenever he fell ill, Anna, Christian and his niece Stefanie, were the first by his side, visiting with him at the hospital. Vincent so looked forward to holidays and special gatherings with his extended Algieri family and especially being able to see all the little children. Vincent loved his family dearly. Those of us that knew and loved Vinnie will miss his beautiful sweet soul and his incredible mind. He endured and lived through his tragedy and life with grace and dignity.

Vincent is survived by his brothers and sisters, Angelo Nocella and his wife Helena of Mashpee, Giovanna Goslow of Providence, Anna Maria Algieri and her husband Frank of Auburn, Alfonso Nocella and Darlene Nocella of Colorado; nieces and nephews, Christian Algieri and his wife Junia of Auburn, Stefanie Mancini and her husband Ray of Charlton, Tanya Enos and her husband Vinnie of Colorado, Nick Nocella and Nicole Nocella of Colorado, Salvatore Nocella and his wife Jennifer of Mashpee, Anna Purcell and her husband Mike of Mashpee, Maria Kosick and her husband Don of Florida and John Goslow and his wife Evelyn of Worcester; as well as other nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews, Ilaria Enos, Anna, Thomas and Joseph Mancini, Kristopher and Patrick Kosick and Dylan Goslow; one his best friends Dale Coram and his wife Sandy of Tampa, Fl; and many close friends in Florida and at the Odd Fellows Home. He was predeceased by a brother, Giovanni Nocella and a sister Rita Costa.

His family would like to thank the staff at the Odd Fellows Home, and those in the ICU at Saint Vincent Hospital.

Due to restrictions on public gatherings, funeral services will be private, but may be viewed via "live stream" on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. You can view his funeral service by visiting the funeral home website and then selecting "live services" from the menu bar at the top of the page, then selecting "current live services" from the drop-down menu.

Thank you for having the service online. I was honored to be a part of it. I have known Vinny for 12 years as his dietitian. I often heard him speak of his niece, usually assuring me that she would take care of this or that for him. It made me happy to know he had such a loving and supportive family. I appreciated his knowledge and interest in nutrition. Always with nuts at his bedside that his family brought him! Vinny had an eclectic taste in music. At times I would hear a beautiful aria coming from his room and other times it was 60's rock. It cheered up my workday. Some visits to him would be short as I could see he was very focused on his painting. It was lovely to see his passion for his painting. His art will live on and be appreciated as so many of his painting hang on the walls of the Odd Fellows Home.
Sending virtual hugs and love to the family.

Before the current shut down of visitors to nursing homes ( Covid-19 virus), one of my weekly visits was to bring holy communion to Vinnie. I had a chance to talk in depth with him . When I shared my southern Italy heritage, Vinnie related to me that he met the saint Padre Pio as a boy. He remembered the smell of roses that characterized Padre Pios presence and the piercing brown eyes of this saint.
His room and the corridors of the nursing home were adorned with his creative art work and I marveled that he could paint with his stiff fingers and partial movement capability.
For the past two years, I brought Vin his weekly holy communion and I developed a growing relationship with him. He was an inspiration to me with his knowledge and talents. His love for classical literature brought back memories of my teaching and college days. When he said that he enjoyed reading the French authors like Flaubert in the French language, I realized he was not the usual nursing home patient. His mind was sharp and as the obit stated, he loved politics. He was a President Trump supporter at a time when people in Massachusetts were reluctant to admit it. He said that he had some lively discussions with staff and visitors about politics. Vin had a close relationship with some of the staff members whom I would see at times. I will miss Vin. He was never angry in my presence. Sometimes he exhibited frustration over medical procedures he had to experience. I once asked him if he felt bitterness over the individual that caused the auto accident leaving him confined to a nursing home as a paraplegic. His answer was that he had no bitterness because the other person didn't do it deliberately. Although Vin admitted he felt hurt that the other driver did not inquire about the extent of his injury.

Now The Lord has released him from the prolonged earthly suffering that he experienced. When I would pray with him and place the host on his tongue, his look of reverence and belief reminds me of the words of Christ.

Jesus once said, Unless you eat my body and drink my blood, there is no life in you(John 6:53). I believe that Vin has experienced his Purgatory on earth and is being welcomed into his Heavenly reward.
Praise God!

So sorry to hear about Vinnie's passing. We and his sister Anna were friends back in North High and it was terrible to hear about his tragic accident but fortunate that he had his talent to fall back on. He was a great guy, quiet and good humored and he'll be missed.

I was also a member of HC Class Of 71 and although I did not know Vincent I did read that wonderful brief description of his life. He sounded like he was a special person with a unique story touching many lives with a positive effect. What more can one ask for?

So sad...My mom and I would visit her friend every Sunday after church, and I enjoyed visiting everyone else, Vinnie and I had slightly different political views, but that didn't really matter. We have been prohibited from visiting Odd Fellows for the past 3 months more or less because of the panDAMic and Moms friend Ruth also passed away during this time apart. It was a joy to have met Vinnie he is brilliant still!
