Anthony "Tony" Hartman

Anthony George (Tony) Hartman, 91, of Tellico Village, died July 22, 2025, after a lengthy and rewarding life. He was born on February 24, 1934, to Anthony J. and Catherine L. (Kobler) Hartman in Chicago, IL.
Preceded in death by his parents. He and his sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Hartman Murray, were raised by his mother, her parents and two single aunts in their grandparents' house in Chicago, IL.
Tony graduated from St. Killian's Grammer School and Leo High School which he attended on a music scholarship. He received a complete scholarship from the Arthur J. Schmitt Foundation to attend Fournier Institute of Technology in Lemont, IL and the University of Illinois in Urbana, where he graduated with a BSEE. He also graduated from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey CA with a MSME degree.
Tony then embarked on an active-duty career in the U.S. Navy primarily as an Engineering Duty Officer. For twenty-three years he was involved in designing, building, overhauling, repairing, contracting and contract administration and litigation for all classes of U.S. Navy ships from submarines to aircraft carriers.
Tony met his wife, Marianne Kavanagh, on a blind date in San Francisco. They have six children: Katherine Bolton born in Oak Park IL while Tony was in the Sea of Japan on the USS Black DD666, Anne Gearin (Robert) and MaryEllen were born at Fort Ord Army Hospital in Monterey CA while Tony was a student at PG School, Thomas and Monica Henderson were born at the Cubi Point NAS Hospital, Subic Bay PI while Tony was stationed at the ship repair facility there, and Clare Gutowski (Michael) was born at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bremerton WA while Tony was Head of the Repair Department on the U.S.S. Gompers AD-37 being outfitted there.
They have produced eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
After his Naval career, Tony spent over ten years with General Electric Steam Turbine in Lynn MA.
Marianne and Tony were both very active in their catholic church communities in the areas of Adult Religious Education. Sacramental Ministry, Liturgical Planning, Marriage Encounter, Marriage Retorno, Cursillo, Hospice Ministry and Music Ministry.
After all the children completed their college programs Tony retired for the second time and he and Marianne moved to Tellico Village in Tennessee where they continued their ministries and enjoyed traveling and the other benefits of retirement.
Visitation, funeral mass, and reception will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2025. Visitation will start at 10:00 AM, with the mass beginning at 11:00 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle church, 1580 Saint Thomas Way, Lenoir City, TN.
Burial will follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
