Nancy Smith Swartwout, 92, of NHC Oak Ridge TN, formerly of Tellico Village in Loudon, Tenn., died at NHC Oak Ridge on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024.
Nancy was born in Floral Park, NY, the daughter of Myfanwy Williams and Henry Waterbury Smith. She was 92 years old.
Mrs. Swartwout graduated from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Westminster College in Wilmington, PA, and a Master's of Arts Degree from Columbia University in NYC.
After a brief tenure teaching at Middletown High School in Middletown, NY, Mrs. Swartwout went on to teach at Orange County Community College (now SUNY - Orange) for the following 30 years. She taught in the Speech and Theater Department as well as the English Department retiring in 1988 as Professor Emerita.
She served as President of the New York State Speech/Communication Association; President of the Middletown NY Women's University Club and Chair of Hill Hold and Brick House Museums. She was a member of (GCA) Garden Club of Orange and Dutchess County (NY).
In Tennessee, she served as President of the Tellico Village Concert Committee and was a member of PEO, Chapter AX of Tellico Village.
Nancy was pre-deceased by her husband Charles H. Swartwout Jr. and survived by her sister Ruth S. Woody, her nephews the Rev. David S. Woody and Douglas Woody, her niece Nancy W McManus and numerous cousins.
Mrs. Swartwout will be interred in the family plot at Laurel Grove Cemetery 4 n Port Jervis, NY. Funeral arrangements will be at the convenience of the family.
