Anna Epps Obituary
Brentwood, TN
May 18, 2017. Age 86. Peacefully passed away surrounded by loved ones at her home in Brentwood. She was born in New Orleans, LA on July 8, 1930 to the late Dr. and Mrs. Ernest Cherrie, Sr. She married Dr. Joseph Epps, Sr. in 1968, who preceded her in death in 1984.
In her 62 years of work in medical education, Dr. Epps served as professor, department head, and research fellow. She went on to become both Asst. Dean and later Assoc. Dean of Student Services at Tulane Univ, later being named interim VP of Academic Affairs. She developed MEdREP, a program to reinforce and enhance minority and disadvantaged students; helped prospective medical students prepare for MCAT; and gained experience with lab projects.
In 1997, Dr. Epps was named Dean of the School of Medicine at Meharry Medical College, making her the first female dean and first African American woman with a Ph.D. to become dean of a medical school in the US. She served as dean until 2002 as well as serving as Senior Advisor to the President. She was later named Dean Emerita for the School of Medicine. She served as Meharry's 11th President and CEO from 2013-2015.
Dr. Epps is also preceded in death by stepdaughter, Dr. Grace Epps and beloved brother, Dr. Ernest Cherrie, Jr. She is survived by her stepson, Joseph (Shirley) Epps, Jr.; sister-in-law, Lois Carlson Cherrie; nephew, Ernest (Nancy) Cherrie, III; two nieces, Tiffany (Blaine Le Cesne) Cherrie and Cyd Cherrie Anderson; and a host of relatives and friends.
The family will greet friends on Saturday, June 10, 12-1p at The Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis of France, 615 Pere Antoine Alley, New Orleans, LA and a funeral mass follow with Bishop Fernand J. Cheri officiating. Inurnment will be private.
A memorial will be held on Thursday, June 15 at 10am at Meharry's Kresge Learning Resource Ctr Auditorium, Nashville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Anna Cherrie Epps, Ph.D. Ctr for Educational Development and Support at Meharry. LEWIS & WRIGHT FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 2500 Clarksville Pk, 615-255-2371.
