Pastor Sherman drew me out of Methodism to the Baptist church, and I was baptized by him at First Baptist church in Asheville, NC. I wanted to be "dunked" since I had only been "sprinkled". I knew that was not my salvation, but like the Lord, I felt it was the "right thing to do".

For those in Christ, "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord..." Apostle Paul.

Dr. Cecil Sherman was my friend. We renewed our friendship at Baylor on March the 29th during the Heritage Club President's dinner. He was truly one of the most enduring, loving and compassionate pastors as well as his teaching and writing abilities. He often remarked that the Broadway Baptist Church in Ft. Worth was a wonderful pastorate. My daughter cherishes the moments she was one of his nurses in M.D. Anderson Hospital. Dr. Howard O. Wynne, Kingwood, Texas.

Genie, Accept my sympathy in the loss of your Dad. Dads are really special and I know you will miss him. What a special man to many who knew him, but more importantly he was your Dad.

Cecil was my pastor...mentor...teacher...friend. He shaped and enriched my life through his commitment to Christ and his wisdom, keen insight, prophetic teachings, courage, integrity, and humor. How blessed I was to grow up in First Baptist Asheville! How blessed I was by my friendship with Cecil, Dot, and Genie! How blessed I have been to continue to learn from Cecil through the commentaries and books he has written. His legacy will continue to bless all of us in the years to come. My prayers are with you...Genie, Doug, Nathaniel, Bill, Veta, Ruth, Roger, and the entire family. Gary and I share your grief and I pray that God will carry each of you and each of us gently through this journey of grief and healing.

I was a member of First Baptist, Asheville for 17 years of Dr. Sherman's ministry. I learned much and began to teach S. S. during that period. I owe a great deal of my biblical knowledge to his ministry and the study that I did under that ministry.

Doris and I join the hosts of other people who admired Cecil more than we can adequately express. His courage and integrity in all things are to be greatly praised. It is too bad that he could not be cloned so many other people could benefit from association with him. We express to the family our deepest sympathy and prayers for their ability to cope with the loss of Cecil.

Growing up in nearby Hickory, NC - Cecil was well-beloved, appreciated for his wisdom and preaching, and a mentor to many. A man of great wisdom - courage - Godly love - a generous spirit, beloved pastor and teacher - and a dedicated husband to Dot, father, grandfather, brother. We are richer that his life touched ours. May light perpetual shine upon him. steve teague (milwaukee, wisconsin)
