Daniel Liff Obituary

Daniel John Liff

Santa Barbara, CA

Daniel John Liff, age 56, died peacefully at home in Santa Barbara, California on June 27, 2015.

Born in Nashville, Daniel was predeceased by his parents, Nina and Noah Liff. He is survived by siblings, Jan Abby Liff and Adam J. Liff; nieces and nephew, Emily Hauber, Natalie Liff and Jonathan Liff.

Known for his sincerity and clever sense of humor, Daniel was a non-ferrous metals buyer for many years in his family's business Steiner-Liff Iron and Metal Company. Prior to the metals business, Daniel was a chef in numerous four and five star restaurants. He was a 1979 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. He also graduated from Ensworth School, White Mountain School, and National Outdoor Leadership School.

Daniel was a sensitive soul who always marched to the beat of his own drummer. He was creative and artistic with an amazing attitude of gratitude and generosity. He loved his God, his family and his country. Daniel was delighted by nature, cooking, art, Jerry Garcia & the Grateful Dead, German cars, rock 'n roll, college & professional sports, and his cats. Daniel was a proud member of Congregation B'nai Brith and of the Coral Casino Swim Club in Santa Barbara, California.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Congregation Sherith Israel, 3600 West End Ave, Nashville, TN, 37205 or a charity of one's choice. Arrangements for Interment in Nashville will be announced soon.

Daniel will be fondly remembered as a wonderful man, son, husband, brother, and friend. May he rest in peace.

I met Dan in the early 80's while he was attending college in New Hampshire (Plymouth). We both shared the same interest - The Grateful Dead- He would come over to hang out and we would grill up some steaks and have a feast while the tape decks would be working overtime to make Grateful dead tapes. I also went to many shows with Dan he was a great traveling companion, a very kind soul. My condolences to his family, he was a very special person and it saddens me to hear of his passing.

I met Dan at a Grateful Dead concert in Nassau Coliseum on May 6, 1981, and we had been close friends ever since. We travelled to dozens of concerts all over the United States and even to Europe. We shared meals at 3-star Michelin restaurants in San Francisco and Paris as well as award-winning crabcakes in Maryland! We had many memorable moments together, and I will sorely miss reminiscing with him. My life was made more enjoyable thanks to him.
