Janet Charlton Obituary

Janet Thompson Charlton

Janet Thompson Charlton passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2020 following a life full of love, friendship, adventure and a passion for healing others. She was born in Nashville, Tennessee on November 8, 1943 to the late Ben W. and Elizabeth Thompson. She attended Hillsboro High School where she was a student body officer and All City basketball guard. While at Hillsboro, she met her husband Hugh while working on his campaign for student body president. He didn't win, but she and Hugh found love. They married at West End United Methodist Church on July 11, 1964. She later graduated from the St. Thomas School of Nursing leading to a lifelong career in hospital work culminating with her favorite role as School Nurse. She followed Hugh through the US Army and all the places Dupont sent him, including Orange, Texas, where first son Michael was welcomed into the family. Then, onward to Wilmington, Delaware, where the second son Matthew was born. Their third son Benjamin, arrived in Victoria, Texas. The family moved to Bay City, Tx., followed by a return to Victoria which became a long-term home. After retirement, Hugh and Janet returned home to the Nashville area. Janet was the active one in the family. She was a runner, a marathoner, and a walker who enjoyed skipping across the bridges at Radnor Lake. She found great joy in spending time with her friends and with her church through music and the extended Emmaus community in Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother David Thompson. She is survived by her brothers Pete Thompson and John Michael Thompson (Shannon), her husband, Hugh, her children Michael (Wrenay), Matthew (Amy), and Benjamin, and her four grandchildren, Chloe, Mia, David, and Carolyn. A memorial service is planned for 4:00pm Sunday, November 8th at Christ United Methodist Church in Franklin, Tennessee. Memorial gifts may be made to the Music Ministry at Christ United Methodist Church 508 Franklin Road, Franklin, Tn. 37069 . Electronic gifts can be made at www.christumcfranklin.org/give. Hugh, our hearts and prayers go out to you and your family during this difficult time. When Janet was around, it never was a quiet time!! Lots of stories, laughs, action, food, card playing and plain old fun! We treasure those memories which started in 1975 at St. Mark's United Methodist of Church. Our kids fondly remember your being MYF counselors at church. It was so good to stay in touch through these many years. On our last visit, you proudly showed us all highlights of your beautiful State of Tennessee! The picture of Janet is a perfect picture of her full and enthusiastic life. We are looking forward to spending eternity with Janet where she will be in perfect health, no more sorrow and her legs will be the same length again! Much love to all of you from our family! Our deepest sympathy to Hugh and all your family. You became our closest friends when you and Sam started your jobs with DuPont in Orange, Texas in 1965. We loved you both so much and had so many wonderful times together. Janet was so outgoing and made such a great impression on us. And we have kept in touch with calls and visits and enjoyed our families as they grew up over the years. We are so blessed to a part of those memories. May God comfort you during these challenging days and bless you with so many wonderful memories.

I met Janet in 2019 through Christ United Methodist Church. I will always remember her positive attitude and enthusiasm for life as she met the challenges that each day presented. Her smiling face and kind spirit was comforting and her happiness was contagious. She always made my day better. I am thankful for having known her as a friend. My thoughts and prayers are with Hugh and the family.

I was privileged to know Janet at Hillsboro in 1957-58 and then years later as Hugh's wife. My friendship with the two of them endured long periods of little contact but blossomed when we did get together again. She was an enthusiastic school nurse, mother, wife, athlete, and friend. She lived fully and generously. She was a faithful church member and she nourished friendships in Texas as well as in Tennessee. Her life casts ripple effects far out into her world and the world is so much better for Janet.
