You are missed old friend!

My best friend since the day we met in 1958 in the first grade is at rest. As Jim faced his last days he admonished me for regretting to stay in touch with "Don't worry, that is just life." I still wish we had been closer, as we were as teenagers and spent hours wondering what life held for us. I was always amazed at the innate intelligence Jim faced life with coupled with good common sense. He faced death with the same nobility. I will miss you, my friend, but we will see each other again. I love you.

Jimmy and I were school mates many years ago. We became friends on Facebook and his posts were enlightening and usually funny. I learned, not surprisingly, he loved The Lord of the Rings (as I did) and the writings of Tolkien. It was such a delight to see Jim at our High School Reunion in 2011 and to also meet Mary. They drove together with the top down in "The Black" and I was able to snap a couple pictures as they left that night. Jim would write from his heart and I felt, over the years, I really glanced at his soul and true character~ One thing I remembered him writing was in loving Mary; and his only regret having found her later in life was that he could not love her longer...Jim left us too soon but we are all better from having known him. He taught us a lot about living and a lot about dying. My heartfelt sympathy to Mary and Family; it was so obvious the delight and love he had for you. Lifting you up!

Mary, just hugging you tight tonight. I am so happy you two found each other but am sorry it ended too soon. What wonderful memories to cherish.

I've never met Jim, I didn't really know him, but I will miss him.

Jim was a member of Undertow, the community of Suzanne Vega fans, for many years. Through this community I interacted with him, and found a warm, funny, insightful person, a family man, a music fan, a car lover, an altogether great guy.

The news of Jim's illness came to me as a shock, as it did for so many others. It was like hearing of a sudden death, but with just enough time to say goodbye.

I'm glad I had the opportunity to touch Jim's life and to have him touch mine. He is in my thoughts and the thoughts of most Undertow members, I'm sure.

I worked with Jim years ago at South Central Bell. He was always full full of personality. So talented. I often would read things he would say on Facebook in the past few years, Just sad for Lexie and Josh. It's hard to give up parents so young. Mary I know from the things he would write you changed his life. I know he was thankful for you. The family will be in my prayers,

I smiled when I saw Jim described as a "mentor." He was certainly that, and more, to my daughter Hannah Sakalla, who worked at the Vanderbilt Library. He was so paternal and kind and interested in her progress. Even after she graduated, they kept in touch on Facebook. When we found out that our beloved dog was terminally ill, Jim offered words of profound comfort that helped not only Hannah but me as I read them. Jim was a wonderful man. Our condolences to his family and loved ones.

Although I never met Jim and accidentally became friends with him on Facebook through mutual friends Neal and Jody Robinson, I truly believe I missed something. A man with a great attitude, both in life and in his last days, I feel like I knew him just by his posts. I only hope I would handle his situation as well as he did. My condolences to the entire family.

RIP Brother. We will meet again.

Jim became our neighbor as he and Mary were being married. We both felt, right away, that we had known him for decades. The circle on which we survive will never be quite the same. Gonna miss you, Jim.

I was the ILL liaison for the Walker Management Library at Vanderbilt, so I got to work with Jim quite a bit. I was always impressed by his kind nature and caring attitude. I count myself lucky to have known him. About a month before he died, he happened to see a book review I wrote, and he gave me the file for a book he thought I'd like better for my Kindle. THAT is the kind of guy, Jim was. Thoughtful and kind.

I had the pleasure to work with Jim at Vanderbilt. He was always gracious, knowledgeable, helpful...just a delight. He will be missed by so many.
