Lucian Emerson Obituary

Lucian Franklin Emerson, Jr.

Franklin - Lucian Franklin Emerson, Jr. passed away October 27, 2017. Affectionately known as Pops to his family, Frank was born April 30, 1951 to the late Lucian & Betty Jane Emerson. Frank is survived by his wife of 17 years, Kathy Sellers Emerson; daughter MacKenzie (Michael) Emerson Wheeler; sons Luke (Leigh Ann) & Patrick (Megan) Emerson, Wes (Samantha) & Mason (Liz) Sellers, and his 10 amazing grandchildren: Oliver, Ava, Georgia, Parker, Henry, Hudson, Rush, Harley, Reese and Hayes. He is also survived by his siblings Lucia (Jim) Gage, Melinda (Jim) Hagans, Scott (Kathy) Emerson, Jon (Amy) Emerson.

Frank was a graduate of Vanderbilt University. Upon graduating, he commissioned in the US Navy, attending pilot training and serving for 7 years. He continued his service with the Tennessee Air National Guard, retiring with 20 years of service. A man of many facets, Frank was a pilot, businessman, entrepreneur, broker, investor, consultant, and photographer. As a cancer survivor, Frank was a passionate advocate for the development of palliative care models and end of life treatment nationwide.

In addition to his love for his family, Frank's heart was fulfilled when he was helping others, not only locally but in international communities as well. Frank will be remembered by family and countless friends for his disarming charm and warm smile; as a strong leader and as a man whose influence and impact are far reaching.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Franklin Rotary at Breakfast, Starfish International. Visitation will be November 3, 2017 from 1:30-3:30 at Brentwood United Methodist Church (309 Franklin Rd., Brentwood, TN). A memorial service will follow.

Frank was one of the first people I met when we moved to Nashville in 1995. We were both cancer advocates and I admired Frank for his strength and unwavering voice for patient treatment and cancer research. In later years, Ken and I marvelled at the hope he offered others as he fought his own battle. Kathy, we are deeply sorry for your loss.

I know Frank from Jr High and High School in Wellesley, MA. I last saw him in 2009. We called him Emma; his mother called him Frankie. Frank was intelligent, talented and a great athlete. He was motivated and worked hard. He was full of positive energy. He had an enthusiastic infectious personality and was fun to be around.
Godspeed Emma!

Frank was a NROTC Midshipman under my tutelage when he attended Vanderbilt University and even then he stood out as unique, a leader, one you could trust and it was obvious he was going to do great! His life is a testimony to his character. He has left an indelible mark on many others during his life. Fortunately, we had gotten together a few months ago and we had the opportunity to meet Kathy. He will not be forgotten.

I had the pleasure of meeting Frank and sharing a few really nice evenings with him and his wife when I lived in Nashville years ago. I was so honored to get to know his children and spending many happy hours enjoying Emerson family events. I'm very sorry for his loss and for the pain and sorrow of his loved ones.

I only came to know Frank as of late through this season of Point Men Ministries at BUMC. While his time influencing me was short, it made a profound impact on me. I was privileged to sit beside him, share a coffee with him, and listen to him speak to our table. I will miss his smile.

It s better to beg forgiveness than to ask for permission. I loved Frank before I knew him because he returned joy to my dear friend, Kathy. The longer I knew him, the more I admired him for his inquisitive mind, his empathy for others, and his loyalty to family and friends. He surely joins the Saints above.

Frank was an unusually heroic spirit. In the darkest days of chemo, his body scarcely a wraith, he pushed through every disability with undaunted courage. And then -and since- he has inspired the best in us by his example of selfless service, especially for the poor of this world. He has been a bright light who has made this place far better for his passing through. He belongs in the company of angels.
