Robert Vantrease Obituary

Robert Vantrease

Nashville, TN

Born on August 6, 1927 in Nashville, Tennessee and passed away on July 7, 2016.

Preceeded in death by parents, Fred A. Vantrease and Nellie Dalton Vantrease; and brothers, Billy Vantrease and Joe Dalton Vantrease.

Robert attended local schools including Cavert, Eakin and West End High School, Vanderbilt University, University of Tennessee at Nashville and Watkins Institute. He was employed by Vanderbilt Medical Center in the Department of Medical Illustration for over 65 years. He was a longtime member of the Tennessee Art League, having joined in 1955, and was also a member of the Nashville Artist Guild, Tennessee Watercolor Society and the Pastel Society of America. He also held a lifelong membership at Cheekwood and the Parthenon Conservancy.

Robert was a well-known artist in this area. He liked painting landscapes on location; he was noted for his pen and ink architectural renderings of residences, churches, schools and other historical buildings. Frequently he would be seen sketching at the symphony, the ballet, musicals and the circus. His work can be found in numerous corporate and private collections. More recently he had been doing portrait sketches in pencil of friends and family, over one hundred produced in 2006 and 2007. A pen and ink rendering of the Vanderbilt Medical School entrance done in 1953 was used for many years on commencement announcements and many other publications by the University. In the foyer of that entrance is a hand lettered plaque of the Oath of Hippocrates commissioned by the medical school Class of 1953. He also has two paintings hanging at the entrance of the Children's Hospital.

Visitation will be held at Woodlawn Roesch-Patton Funeral Home on Saturday, July 16, 2016, from eleven o'clock until service time at one o'clock in the afternoon, also at the funeral home.

One would be hard pressed to find a kinder or more generous soul than Bobby Vantrease. We would run into each other at events such as Oktoberfest and enjoy catching up. He did a beautiful watercolor of one of my Irish dance classes. He will be dearly missed.

I drew with Bobby in workshops all over Nashville. He was always trying new materials and challenging himself. He was a great inspiration and I consider myself very lucky to have known him.

I was devastated to learn of Bobby's death. He was a lovely, kind man in every way. He once arrived at an art reception for a show of my paintings with a vase of flowers for me - I'll never forget that thoughtful gesture, which was so typical of him. I'll remember him always, with love.

I worked with Bobby at Vanderbilt Medical Center for many years. He was a kind, sweet, soft-spoken, gentle man. He was an excellent artist. Our birthdays were 2 days apart and he always gave me one of his pen and ink cards as my birthday card. My favorite was his pen and ink rendering of "The Mountain," the home many years ago of Dr. Philip Felts.

Bobby has been a friend of our family for over 40 years. He had that smile that was contagious. When Stan and I got married at the Cathedral in Nashville he gave us a gift of a drawing of the beautiful picture of the church and in that same picture included our wedding announcement. Every year for Christmas he would send us a homemade post card of a beautiful drawing he drew. He was a very kind soul and I will miss him dearly. Bobby now is the time to fess up I was your favorite instead of Deborah...enjoy your time in heaven!!!!

My grandmother, Ann Floyd, knew Bobby through the Tennessee Art League. As a child, I remember him visiting at her home, and seeing him at art events. When I began working at Vanderbilt in the 70's Bobby worked just down the hall from me. He was a very kind, sweet, gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor. His artwork was beautiful in every sense. I have 2 or 3 of his works and wish I had more. I will always remember Bobby's smile and twinkling blue eyes. He will be missed.

Bobby was my boss at Vanderbilt. He has been a part of my life for over 40 years. He was like a father to me. He was the God Father of my daughter and a part of our family. He was a kind and gentle soul, a generous man with a quick wit. He will be in my heart forever. God bless you Bobby. We have another special Guardian Angel who will be watching over us!!!!
