Virginia Corts Obituary

Virginia (Ginna) Oldfield Corts

August 10, 1948 - February 15, 2021

Ginna was born on August 10, 1948, in Oak Park, IL., and grew up in La Grange, a suburb of Chicago. She is preceded in death by her father, Dr. Raleigh Charles Oldfield, and her mother, Dorothy Kennedy Oldfield. She is survived by her three sisters, Julie, Janie, and Kathy; her husband Tom; her four sons, David, Andy, Charlie, and Tommy; their four beautiful spouses, Heather, Jenny, Abby, and Erin; and 10 loving grandchildren, Maddy, Mia, George, Henry, Raleigh, Eliza, Carden, Eli, Parker, and Charlotte.

Ginna graduated from Lyons Township High School in La Grange in 1966. She attended Vanderbilt University and joined Delta Delta Delta sorority in that same year. Ginna received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1970. After working as a nurse in San Francisco and as a public health nurse in Nashville, she received a full scholarship to join the inaugural nurse practitioner program at Vanderbilt University. She earned her Masters of Science in Nursing with honors in May of 1974.

In December 1972, she went on a blind date with the man who would become the love of her life, Tom Corts. Four months later they were engaged, married in September of 1973, and pregnant with their first child one month later.

Ginna loved medicine and held numerous clinical positions at Vanderbilt, Lynchburg Medical Center, and Ensworth High School, along with a lifetime of unofficial practice nursing her friends and family.

Ginna dedicated her life to her husband and to raising her four sons. She was heavily involved in their school communities over the years and cherished her roles as Montgomery Bell Academy's Spaghetti Supper Chairman as well as President of the MBA's Mother's Club.

Ginna was known to all for her vivacious personality and a smile that could light up a room. She committed herself to helping others and was known for delivering a homecooked meal or fresh baked goods to anyone in need. Her kitchen was the epicenter of her family's life, and she was particularly renowned for her Cereal Stuff (aka Chex Mix) that nourished families across Nashville.

Ginna loved to travel. She and Tom took their young sons on road trip vacations each summer. She insisted that her sons study abroad in college and took the family on multiple trips to visit them in France and the Netherlands. More recently, she cherished memories of traveling the summer months with Tom across Europe.

In the end, Ginna treasured her family above all else and lived for the joy of having her husband, sons, daughters-in-law, and all her grandchildren surrounding her and creating chaos in her kitchen.

Her family would like to express its sincere gratitude for the overwhelming love and support we have received.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a one-time donation to the Thomas and Virginia Corts Family Travel Endowment which provides financial support to students engaged in study abroad programs at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The link can be found here: http://giving.utk.edu/corts

A celebration of life will be held at a later date when all of her dear friends are vaccinated this Summer.

Just saw Ginna´s notice in the Vanderbilt Nurse . I am so saddened to hear. She was a dear friend. Because of her love and support I was able to complete my nursing degree at Vandy. My heart goes out to all the family. Ginna was an angel on earth and now in heaven.

I was Gina Corts hairdresser . She was one of my most favorite clients. She never said an unkind word about anyone. She was positive and adored her husband and family. She brought me a goody bag every Christmas for my kids! I loved her and it brings tears to my eyes to know that she has passed. She will be missed greatly. I’m so sorry for this family loss. She was a beautiful soul.

Ginna was the epitome of strong and graceful. She was the kind of beautiful force who, upon entering her kitchen, would hand you a glass of wine and have you staying for dinner within the first two minutes of walking in. She was smart and brave, kind and thoughtful, and she loved her family and friends with her whole heart. Her life changed so many lives for the absolute better. An elegant and unique soul, she will be forever missed.
My heart goes out to the entire Corts family.

When our children were young we celebrated many of their birthdays together and often enjoyed Christmas Eve with mutual friends. Gina brought joy to the room with her infectious smile. Her warm caring eyes communicated her interest in others and love of her family and friends. She was adored by many and will be missed.
