William POWELL Obituary

POWELL, William E. Born in Little Rock, AR, Bill attended Little Rock Central High School where he was vice-president of the student body. He excelled in football and track, and was offered twelve college football scholarships. At his mother's insistence, he played saxophone in the band during half time at the football games, and then changed back into his football gear for the second half. He held the State record for the sixty yard dash for many years. Bill loved football and he loved Vanderbilt! He was Vanderbilt player of the week four times, SEC player of the week three times and on the Vanderbilt University Honor Council. Bill was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and an SAE Founder's Medalist. He was a 1950 graduate of Vanderbilt University. He was in the US Naval Reserve and served aboard the USS Coral Seas where he trained with the Naval Academy football team. He possessed an exuberant personality, was a true Southern gentleman and was the epitome of a man's man. He overcame many life-altering challenges in his long life with grace, optimism and perseverance. He was greatly respected and revered by all those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed, but remembered with great fondness for his love of life, family and friends. Bill was the previous owner of Capitol Chevrolet/Honda, one of the largest volume Chevrolet dealers in the Southeast, and the first Honda dealer in Tennessee. He served twice as president of the Tennessee Automobile Association. He was president of the Nashville Automobile Association, where he was the recipient of The Legends Award. He was president of his twenty group for eight years, and was a member of the board of directors of the National Automobile Dealers Association. Bill held memberships in Belle Meade Country Club, Nashville City Club, the Exchange Club, the Cedar Creek Yacht Club, Beaver Creek Country Club, Hillwood Country Club and the Vanderbilt Commodore Club. He was a lifelong supporter of his beloved Vanderbilt University. Bill was preceded in death by loving parents, Ivah Lee Powell and Roy Powell; son, William E. my John Wayne
Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush,
Of quiet birds circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there. I did not die.

Robert Hepburn

He had an exuberant personality and a genuine character that made anyone want to be his friend. I will forever hear him saying to me "I'm his monkey" and how much he wanted me to be his daughter. He truly was a diamond among the rough and I was so blessed to be able to call him my grandfather. I love you grandpa.

I am sorry for your loss. Mr. Powell was one of the very generous and gregarious Vanderbilt Alumni that made new student athletes feel welcome and confirm that they made a good decision to come to Vanderbilt. His support of Vanderbilt Football was an encouragement to every player that had the privilege to meet him. May God be merciful to him and may he rest in peace.

allways enjoyed meeting and talking with Uncle Bill as we called him. As the Parents of Wanda Witherspoon we would get to see uncle Bill occassionally on our trips there to visit Wanda and Dixon and children. I know he will be missed very much as all the family loved uncle Bill and he allways made you feel very welcomed. Our Prayers go out to all the family at this time.
