William Smith Obituary

SMITH, SR., William Robert (Colonel, USMC, Ret)Age 76, died in his home in Marietta, GA, July 2, 2008. He was born March 20, 1932 in Mt. Vernon, IL. He retired in July 1981 after 29 years of dedicated service as a Marine Corp Aviator. His decorations include two Distinguished Flying Crosses, Meritorious Service Medal, two Bronze Stars with valor, twenty-eight Air Medals, two Purple Hearts, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Citation, National Defense Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley R. & Minnie Smith and his brother, John W. Smith. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Phyllis A. Smith; two sons, William R. Smith, Jr. and wife Sharon of Ball Ground, GA, Phillip A. Smith and wife Nancy of Nashville, TN and daughter, Deb White and husband Randy of Marietta, GA; brother, Richard N. Smith of Grassy, MO; two sisters, Sovilla E. Holland and husband Bob of Wichita Falls, TX and Dorothy M. Poole and husband Ron of Olathe, KS; ten grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Service with full military honors will be conducted Monday, July 7, 2008 at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton at 11:30 a.m. His remains have been cremated. Donations may be made to Hospice of Crossroads in lieu of flowers. Arrangements by CREMATION SOCIETY OF THE SOUTH, 770-420-5557.

Daddy, Andrew, Bobby and I loved Uncle Bob beyond measure, as did my mother. We love all of you and want to thank you for all of your love and for welcoming us to say goodbye to Uncle Bob. He will be missed more than we can put into words. We love all of you and Aunt Phyliss and are so incredibly blessed. Thank you for your love and please give Aunt Phyliss all our love too.
