Richard Broadwell Obituary
Born in Portsmouth, VA, Gary was the son of the late Wilson and Ethelen Brown Broadwell.
Gary grew up in the small town of Selma, NC and was a 1961 graduate of Selma High School. He was a member of the Student Council, Beta Club and was an Eagle Scout. He was a good athlete in his youth playing basketball and football. He attended Mars Hill College and was the football team mascot. In his later years he was an excellent golfer and became a level 4 tennis player as well as a tennis official where he and Caren helped to officiate many high level matches. As the years went by he enjoyed crossword puzzles, puzzles and watching all sports being broadcast.
A friend said; It was truly an honor to know Gary. A blessing that everyone should have in their life. His son Rich shared; My dad, Gary, was a great man! He introduced me to Soccer as a kid, staying active and exercising, often taking life in stride and always offering me Life Lessons and Experiences. I will deeply miss him.
Gary's life will be celebrated with a memorial service on Saturday March 8, 2025 at 11 AM at Boles Funeral Home Chapel, 425 W. Pennsylvania Ave, Southern Pines with Dr. Tom Allen officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 am prior to the service.
Gary is survived by his wife of 40 years Caren Ownby Broadwell, sons Richard David Broadwell and Paul Ervin Peninger, daughter Anna Elizabeth Peninger and three grandchildren.
The family suggest in lieu of flowers memorials contributions be made to one's favorite charity.
