Robert Ranger Obituary

WEST WINFIELD - Robert W. Ranger, 79, of West Winfield died Saturday evening, February 18, 2017 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown following a brief illness.

Bob was born June 15, 1937 in Corning to Robert W. and Freida (Spreitzer) Ranger. Raised in Painted Post, Bob graduated from Painted Post High School. He then graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelors Degree and later attained his Masters Degree from Rutgers University.

In December 1978 he married Marjorie Brooks, a union of almost 40 years, in which he once said that "between the two of us we can surmount any obstacle - we are a team". His kindness and compassion were endless.

Bob was employed for over 35 years with Oneida National Bank and its successor banks. After retiring from Fleet Bank he became President of the Financial Institutions Bank in Warsaw. After completing his tenure there he returned to West Winfield, and with a group of investors formed the Bank of Cooperstown, also with offices in Oneonta and Geneva. He retired from their Board of Directors in 2016, remaining as a director emeritus.

Bob also served as the Chairman of the ABA Ag Bankers Committee in Washington, DC, as well as many other ag related committees in the local area. He was a member of the local Rotary, served on the Mt. Markham Central School District Board and Herkimer County BOCES Board for over 25 years.

Bob was a truly remarkable man. His passion was for his family and he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved to hunt and fish, and his home was surrounded by wildlife that her dearly loved to watch and for which he provided sanctuary.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Brooks Ranger of West Winfield; his children, Lisa Doyle of Woodbridge, VA, Todd M. Ranger of Camden, Kelley Tripple (Michael Dougherty) of Bridgewater and Luanne T. Brooks of West Exeter; his grandchildren, Chad Bailey, Ryan Bailey, Jordan Doyle and Victoria Doyle, all of Woodbridge, VA, Jacob Tripple (Bree Palmer) and Andrew Tripple, both of West Winfield, Melissa Gregory and her husband Jay of Mt. Vision and Matthew Brooks of West Exeter; and his great-grandchildren, Grant and Grace Gregory, Michael Bailey and Logan Herrin. He is further survived by his siblings, Phyllis Stowell of Painted Post and Donald Ranger of Mount Wolf, PA, as well as his special family, Sara, Gil, Aaden and Abel Sanchez.

In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by a sister, Carol Ann Smith and his step-son, John G. Brooks.

At Bob's request, there will be a private service of remembrance for his immediate family at their convenience.

In lieu of flowers, Bob's family requests that you make a gift in his memory to your favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Beached from fishing but still having fun (c. 1995)

Dear family of Bob,
We are going through family photos and I came across one taken of Bob with my son, Evan, during one of our fishing trips with Bob and Robie back in the 1990s (posted). Always fun, even after an 8-hour drive to Oswego and (all too often) not getting out on the water due to weather conditions. I'm sorry to know that I can't reminisce about those adventures in person with Bob, who was a Fleet colleague of mine, but will always remember him fondly. Richard Staples

Marge,

Sincere sympathy to you and your family. It's hard to imagine the loss you must feel. Bob was a gentleman, a positive role model, and a true leader. I had the privilege of working with him for many years at Oneida National Bank. The lessons learned from him continue to influence me to this day. Every community Bob touched is a far better place today because of his work. May he rest in peace.

BOB RANGER was alwsys a friendly giant of a man. Whether crossing pathways in the WW Post Office or when he attended his Board of Directors meeting at New York Central Mutual, anyone could count on Bob for a friendly greeting. What a wonderful image to leave our world.

One of my favorite pictures of Dad.

Marge and family - I'm so sad to hear of Bob's passing. I saw and had opportunity to work with him back at Norstar and very recently on our projects. He was a wonderful, energetic man and I truly enjoyed his company in all respects over the years. As a friend or family member, I know it is always too soon, but as a person of faith, it is exactly the right time. God bless you and your family during this difficult period.

As a banker and a good citizen, Bob was a friend of the community in promoting jobs and business growth. He was a pleasure to know and to work with. In his day, he was also a very good ball player! May God bless him and condolences to his family.

This was during the trip we made last March. I just love this picture! ❤

A truly remarkable man taken all too suddenly.. my heart is so heavy. I am so very grateful that I had such an amazing grandfather all these years and will miss him terribly. Living in Virginia, I wasn't able to see him very often, but just last March we were able to make a trip up to New York and I'm very thankful for that. I love you Gramps. Forever in my heart ❤

Thank you to everyone for your condolences and kind words on the passing of my Dad. I cannot express how much I will miss him. I am so lucky to have had such a father - hard working, trustworthy, and kind. He encouraged me through all things in my life, good and bad. Even though I have lived in Virginia since the age of 18 we kept in touch every week by phone and in-person visits as often as we could. Dad, I love you so much and I know I will see you again in heaven one day.

My Grandfather was a remarkable person. The amount of help he and Marge have offered not only my family and I, but everyone in his life, cannot be measured. He was and continues to be an inspiration and model to everyone on how to live your life. Rest in peace Gramps. I hope that one day I can become a tenth of the man you were.

Marge, I am so sorry for your loss. Bob was a very special man and always a gentleman. I still remember the day at ONB when he called me down to Utica to ask if I would mind working in Syracuse. He will be missed. RIP Bob.

I first met Bob nearly 50 years ago. Oneida Nat'l Bank sponsored a "Bankers Calf Award" for 4-H members. Bob and Ron Parks visited me at our farm in Remsen as part of that program. After graduating college I began a career in ag finance throughout most of Upstate New York and had the opportunity to have contact with Bob over the years. Always a gentleman, he was a kindred spirit in service to agriculture throughout New York.
I will miss him as a friend and a fellow banker.

Farewell to this life and on to the next!!
Bob I certainly wish you the happiness and excitement this world provided you so you can continue to hunt and fish and take in all of the wonders of the "great outdoors".

Marge I'm so sorry and shocked. I just spoke with about a month ago and he was planning to visit with the next time he was in Syracuse as I don't get around very well. He was a very special man to me. He taught me to be a banker for which I will always be grateful. He was the best "boss" I ever had and I will miss him. If I can do anything for you please let me know. Donna and send our love to and the kids. He was one of a kind. RIP

I am so sad this moment.I will miss seeing Bob. My wholehearted sympathy goes out to his family and his friends.
It is bittersweet, my heart aches but it also rejoices from knowing him.
I'm so glad my life included this wonderful man. He impacted my life in different ways. He showed me how a man of great success treats everyone with kindness and dignity. It is a contrast to others I have encountered throughout life. I remember his example and applied it to how I interacted with others throughout my life.
I met him in my late teens and it began a life of friendship that I felt I didn't deserve, but he made me feel special every moment we shared.
I have countless memories that will remain with me, to many to mention.
From fishing In Michigan to the Unadilla, we had great times during every cast. I still have a 1963 14ft StarCraft Boat he sold me and the first cast this spring from it will be in his honor. I'll keep that boat...
