Dorothy, Richard, David & Angela, please accept my condolences even though I am late to offer them. Great memories of you all in Carrickfergus and then in 1991 when I was able to visit in Ottawa. So sorry for your loss.

Dear Dorothy, Angela, Richard, and David,
Thank you so very much for sharing Sam with me for the years that I worked at the Duke. I have yet to have another boss who comes close to Sam. He made the Duke home to patrons and staff alike...the fun we had and laughter we shared will be in my memories always. Thank you, too, for allowing us to celebrate Sam's life with you at the pub...it was wonderful to be with so many people who loved Sam.
I grieve for you and with you. Take comfort in the fact, Dorothy, that Uel
adored you, and made no secret of the fact!
Take care of each other in this sad time.

I grew up with an Aunt who ran everything for the Church, the Sunday School and all events it seemed. When I told the other kids she really was my Aunt they all said "mine too".
Sam McFall was just the same. When you say to people he's my friend everyone says "mine too".
The world has been enriched by him, thank you Sam.
what a send off at the wake on Sunday!

Uel got his final wish on Sunday at the Hart & Crown . What an amazing feeling to be among a throng of more than 200 people . All of whom knew Uel . He touched so many lives in many different ways. Great band playing music that mean't a lot to him & quite a few others. Of course Carrigfergus was played , how could they have not played that !! It was the place that this special person came from .
He would have been proud of Dorothy & all his family .They made everyone welcome . As for David , amid all the crowd all talking , he started to talk about his Dad. Immediately you could hear a pin drop . He held the floor !
He spoke of his Mum & Dad's lives . Lots of tough times , but oh the humour when he spoke of the Football etc incidents. Every word came from the heart & I know he spoke for all the family , because they have always been close.
It closed with everyone singing ' You'll never walk alone '
I would like to rename it ' Uel never will be alone ' . You will live on forever in your family & friends memories.

Dorothy, David, Richard, Angela - I am very sad but also happy to have had Sammy in our lives. Many of my great life stories has him involved and his smiling face, witty humour and caring charm will be missed greatly. We enjoyed many times together hoisting a pint, playing golf, going on business trips and even my wedding.

Dear Dorothy & family:
Allow me to help friends make a donation in Sam's memory to the Elizabeth Bruyere Foundation.
When trying to do so myself, I ran into obstacles, so want to make it easy for others.
If you have Dorothy's home address & p/number, you can make an on-line donation.
However if you've been out of touch and haven't that info, call directly to:
Elizabeth Bruyere Foundation
43 Bruyère St. Ottawa, ON K1N 5C8
613-562-6319
I was able to make a donation over the phone. The Foundation will forward a notification to the family c/o the funeral home.
Think back. It's easy to reminisce and write about one's fond memories in the 'Guest Book. Why not consider honouring those memories? Consider thanking Sam in a tangible way by making a donation to the hospital where he spent his last days.
Remember the time you spent in The Duke and how often Sam bought you a pint or two? Recalling Sam by donating to the Elizabeth Bruyere Foundation is what friends are about.
Think about it. Hopefully you'll decide to donate. Kim (Butler) McDonell

Dear Dorothy, Angie, Richard & David:
Cannot help smiling even as tears well up, remembering Sam. Please forgive me being too verbose.
Introduced to The Duke in '83. Sam was the epitome of Irish charm who became a friend, a shoulder to cry on, an occasional dance partner and matchmaker! None of this will come as a surprise.
He made all feel welcome: regulars and strangers, virtually any sports team, business people and police officers, immigrants and musicians, groups of friends out for a few pints and darts or conversation.
Sam was exceptionally proud when speaking of “our” Angela or Richard or David or Dorothy (“She's a saint to put up with me”). Occasionally he admitted he didn't know why he was lucky enough to have such a family.
While living out of town, I was heartbroken to read The Duke was closing as it held unforgettable memories. Back in Ottawa, seeing the building abandoned, felt like a bad dream just as I wondered how and where you were.
I treasure a chance meeting at the Fergus Inn around '03, when I was reassured Dorothy - that you and Sam were still the dear folks I'd known 20 years before.
Sam will be deeply missed by the many whose lives he touched. I know I will never forget those ‘glory days' at The Duke.
Undoubtedly his illness was devastating to support and witness. Having experienced the same, I hope your sadness will become less if you can eventually allow your good memories to overtake it.
Kindly accept my sincere sympathy.

Dear Dorothy, Richard, Davy & Angela, my sincerest sympathies on your loss of a great husband, father & friend!!
Sam, Sammy, Uel is a great loss to all of usl! Hard to believe 30 some years have gone by since myself & Syd were the "House" band at The old Duke! What many of us wouldn't give to relive those days again & with Sammy at the helm, as the most gracious host & the glue for all of us that were a part of those great, great days. They can never be replaced.... nor will Sammy. As I spend my days in the hospitality, pub business, I try to carry with me the many things I learned by watching Sammy, the ultimate professional, the ultimate host & the ultimate friend. Through laughter, Sammy brought me to tears many times in the past & though we will celebrate his life, he has brought a different tear today! We are all better people for knowing Sammy & he was responsible for so many of us being friends to this day! He brought a lot of people together.... I am so thankful I was able to share a couple of visits & chats with Sammy in the past few months (thank you Richard & Marie-Claude). We hope you can find some level of support from us, your friends.....God speed Sammy.... God speed!!

Dorothy, Richard, David, Angela,
Our sincerest condolences to you all. We were so very sorry to hear of Sam's passing and can hardly believe that we won't have the opportunity to share a laugh with him again. Sam meant the world to us: a boss, a mentor, a teacher, a friend -- he was to both of us one of those formative people that helped mold us into the people that we've become. We will forever be in his debt and will always look back with immense fondness on the great times we were so blessed to be able to share with him. He was truly one of a kind and it was a privilege to be able to share part of life's journey with him.
With love,

To say that Uel will be fondly remembered and deeply missed seems so inadequate and yet there are only so many ways to express the sense of loss we feel. He was a great friend and team mate and you always knew that if you needed a laugh or if you needed any help you could rely on him to be there.

From the Ottawa Royals Soccer Club, written by Fred Juett on behalf of many members
Sam McFall (Sammy to everyone) was an Ottawa LEGEND. Sammy was a player, Coach, long time sponsor and supporter of the Ottawa Royals Soccer Club and supporter of the Ottawa Gaels. He would do anything for anybody whether they were family, friend or stranger. Anyone that met Sammy never forgot him as he had unforgetable personality.
Sammy and his wife Dorthy operated the Duke of Somerset Pub for many years and it was the unofficial and then official Clubhouse of the Ottawa Royals Soccer Club for many years in the 1980's and 90's. Many an Ottawa Royals function or celebration was held there with both Sammy and Dorthy generously hosting the events.
Both of Sammy's sons, Richard and David, played with the Royals for decades and were both a huge part of the Ottawa Royals. The contribution of the McFall family to this Club is not surpassed.

I'll never forget Sam all those years ago and he will always be in my heart. He was a special man when he first managed The Royal Oak on Bank and continued with The Duke & Blackburn Arms. Regards to Dorothy and the rest of the family, especially David. My deepest condolences.
