Wilfred Peters Obituary

Corning | Wilfred L. Peters, Sr., 86, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, May 27, 2014.
Bill was born on September 5, 1927 to James E. (Pop) Peters and Ava Lynn Swan Peters. He married J. Ruth White on June 17, 1951 in Harrison Valley, PA.
Bill was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. At the conclusion of his military service, he returned to Corning Glass Works where he worked as a millwright (known as Pete) for the next 40 years. Bill and Ruth lived in Woodhull, NY for 30 years, relocating to the Corning, NY area for the next 30 years. After retiring, Bill took up the hobby of woodworking, and over the years designed and crafted various wood pieces for family members.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth; daughters: Billie (Anthony) Gammaro of Presho NY, Penny (Daniel) Alderman of Batavia NY, Ona Lynne (Donald) Rouse of Painted Post NY; son: Wilfred L. (Joy) Peters Jr. of Corning NY; grandchildren: Tracy (Marvin) Chumura of Chesapeake VA, Bryon (Martha) LaChance of Rochester NY, Michael Rouse of Liverpool NY, Eric (Shaenna Stefanides) Alderman of Rochester NY, Allen Alderman of Batavia NY, Andrea Gammaro of Morganton NC, Jaclyn Gammaro of Eatonton GA; great-grandchildren: Evan and Brett LaChance, Michael and Makayla Chumura, Devon Crocker, Jayvyn Gammaro, Jonah and Taryn White, Brenna and Allora Stefanides; great-great-granddaughter: Adalyn Liebengood; sister: Lita Woods of FL; sisters and brother-in-law: Lorena Peters of Corning NY, Gerry Bassney of Tioga PA, Elwin VanEtten of Harrison Valley PA; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bill was predeceased by his 4 brothers, Ernie, Quincy, Bob, Ted and sister Clella, and other family members. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Bill's life on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 from 4-7 PM or Wednesday, June 4, 2014 from 11AM-Noon at Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney Street, Corning, NY. A short memorial service will be held there at noon.
Flowers will be furnished by the family. Family members suggest that memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
